ALMOST PERFECT
Grey looked at the sugar maple, at the rifle he couldn’t see, at the woman who had taught him how to build dreams and how to burn them.
Then he looked at Lisa—eyes bright with fury, chin lifted like a parapet.
He took the notebook from her hand, ripped it down the spine.
Pages tore like old bandages.
He dropped the pieces, pulled a lighter from his pocket, burned the bundle on the wet gravel until only smudges of charcoal remained.
Wind carried the ash across the yard like grey snow.
He turned to the SUV, raised both middle fingers, shouted: “Not for sale.”
Engine roared, but instead of charging the vehicle reversed, tyres spitting stones, disappearing around the bend.
