He had taken on many shifts at work so that his young family could enjoy the basic pleasures in life. Dad pulled me in for one last hug and said, “I know your mom would be so proud to see you right now honey. This is what we always dreamed for you when you were little. You are going to do great things, big things. I didn’t bust my ass in a shitty factory job my whole life for my kids to do the same. You are only allowed to come home to visit, that’s it. I don’t want that hole in the earth to be your forever home.” That put me over the edge and the tears came like a waterfall. It meant everything to me that dad was proud of me, and I would not let him down.

I instinctively shifted to the side to hide the damp patch on my blouse before looking up at him. "What do you mean?" I asked. My eyes flicked past him toward the trampolines. The sight of Julian and Lydia playing there gave me the courage to speak up. The man chuckled. "I'm Finneas Zurick, Zachary's dad. We met at the kindergarten parent meeting," he began. "I've been thinking about you ever since then. I've been wondering when we'd finally get a chance to talk." His words grew more improper by the second. A faint blush spread across my cheeks as I studied him.

Dad exactly asked what I had been preparing myself to Girard. He was pestered by the lack of information, obviously. My parents were given as much information as I had received. I swung my legs out of bed, freshened up, feeling oddly lighter, and went downstairs for breakfast. "Good morning, Dad." I hugged him from behind as he sat, leafing through documents and sipping coffee. "What are you working on so early?" "Good morning, princess." He ruffled my hair, smiling. "Just some office shit I couldn't finish last night because your mother threw a tantrum." "Tantrum?" Mom appeared with plates, planting them before us and giving Dad a pointed look. "I threw a tantrum? You were the one watching stupid reels instead of giving me attention, and for calling that out I'm the one throwing tantrums?"

“Declan and I, we helped create you and your mommy grew you in her tummy.” “We knowed dat part!” Kellan announces, earning a nervous grunt from Kade. “Right, well “that part” doesn’t make us dads. See, being a dad is way more special but you have to earn it. Declan and I want the chance to earn being your dads but we’d need to spend time with you, play with you, read you stories and put you to bed at night, that kind of stuff.”

When I start middle school, Dad quits his job to become my full-time study coach. He devotes every ounce of energy to monitoring my academics and refuses to let a single distraction near me.
