When he turned, his smile was small but real, and my heart clenched.
“Morning, angel,” he said softly.
I took the cup, fingers brushing his, and tried to match his smile. “Morning.”
We sat at the table together, sipping coffee as the sun spilled through the glass windows. I wanted to freeze that moment, capture it, live in it forever.
But even then, I saw it. The way his eyes flicked to the skyline, sharp and calculating, as though the city itself might shatter the glass and drag him back.
And maybe it already had.
