I stood at the edge of a shoreless lake, but it wasn't water that sloshed against my ankles, it was blood, dark and crimson and slowly rising to cover me whole. My lips dropped to scream, but nothing came out, not even a whimper… So I turned to run… A hold clamped around my thighs, another on my ankles, my knees, my wrist. I looked down again, just as hundreds more of them broke the surface, bloody skeletal frames reaching out for me with dripping hands. Their eyes were hollow and dark, and though their teeth clamped shut, they screamed. They held me, drawing me in, pulling me down until I was drowning, widened eyes at the sky for an escape.

“Then the Hounds will have their scent.” From behind her, cages were wheeled forward, each trembling with restrained motion. Inside, shadowy creatures paced restlessly—sleek, eyeless beasts with long limbs and smoke leaking from their jaws. The Covenant called them Null Hounds, bred from captured spirits of the Undergrowth, forged to hunt what lived between light and shadow. “Release them,” Selene ordered. Chains snapped, and the beasts lunged forward, dissolving into black mist. The soldiers watched them vanish across the horizon, streaks of darkness that would follow the bond’s trail wherever it fled.

" Arrow sounded feral as he spoke. I knew he was trying to keep his wolf under control. "We were just riddled with pain," I explained. "It wasn't ours, it was hers." My mother began to cry.
