Sera leaned over him, breath coming apart, forehead nearly touching the edge of the table. “You’re not allowed,” she whispered again brokenly. “I didn’t survive everything just to lose you like this.” Her hands slowed. Not stopped. But slowed. And in that terrible, suspended moment, surrounded by screaming machines and waiting eyes, Sera Voss finally understood the cruelest truth of all. She wasn’t fighting for revenge. She wasn’t fighting because he deserved saving. She was fighting because she loved him. And loving him might still not be enough to keep him alive.
