There’s no one in it. *

she said, voice firm. “You won’t.” “I’m not sleeping beside you.” “You’re not sleeping on that stiff thing either,” he said, nodding toward the slim sofa pushed against the wall. “It’s a joke. You’ll be miserable.” She crossed her arms. “And you think I won’t be miserable sleeping beside you?” He didn’t flinch. “We’re adults, Isabel. We don’t have to touch. We don’t even have to speak. Just… lie down. Rest.” “You touched me tonight.”

Safe. At least for tonight.

Finding their way toward something stronger than before. A quiet night in. A real one.

Real things. Walking back to his car the city is cold, properly cold now, autumn doing what autumn does in Chicago which is remind you that winter is not a threat but a promise. He puts his arm around me as we walk. At the car he opens my door, which he does not always do, which means tonight is a tonight where he does that. "Good evening," he says. "Very good," I say. He kisses me once at the car door. Pulls back. Looks at me.

I can’t seem to wrap my head around the whole thing and I’m not going to lie, the fact that I can’t feel my legs as to be the worst thing to ever happen to me. “Get some sleep I’ll be back to check in on you. If you need me, just ring the bell okay?” She instructs softly and I nod, still no wanting to talk. I hear the pitter patter of her footsteps retreat and the door shuts softly, as she walks out of the room. I run my hand through my hair as I adjust the duvet on my body. I let out a deep sigh before closing my eyes, but I quickly open them back up remembering what happens whenever I try to sleep.

Not tonight. Not anymore.
