I felt something tighten in my chestโpride, love, awe. "That's because she never broke you, Layla. She only showed you what you were made of."
Her lips trembled into a smile. "Steel," she said softly. "Ironically enough."
"You make it sound like I'm invincible," she murmured.
"You are," I said. "Not because you never fall. Because you rise like it's muscle memory."
I could see the tears breaking free now, silent but unashamed. Layla reached for my hand first this time, threading her fingers through mine.
