My breath turns shallow, ragged. My eyes dart frantically across the room. I need something. Anything. Something to protect myself. The door swings open with a bang, slamming against the wall. I jolt violently. I force my body to move, to stand, to do something—anything—to not look helpless.

“Not until she says you can.” Fear rippled through the crowd. Some tried to crawl back. Others cried. A few begged. None of it mattered. Ethan turned away from them and walked back into the mansion. Up on the balcony, Lily stood frozen. Her fingers were wrapped tightly around the iron grill behind her, knuckles pale. The screams below had faded, replaced by a suffocating silence. When she heard footsteps, her breath hitched. “Lily.” She turned slowly. Ethan stood a few feet away, his shadow stretching toward her under the balcony lights. She didn’t move closer. She didn’t move away. Her eyes were wide—not with hatred, not with anger—but with something closer to fear mixed with disbelief.

At that moment, Shawn burst into our den without warning. His face was shadowed with a gloom darker than the blackest night. His wolf eyes—no longer the calm blue I once knew—swirled with crimson fury… and a flicker of something far more fragile. Fear. “Jose…” His voice cracked, barely human. “Tell me… why? Why did Joanne leap from the Moonlit Crag?” Shawn's voice was a raw, grating rasp, and each syllable dragged from the depths of his throat, thick with barely restrained accusation.

And he did just that; the flashes all came back to me, and when I couldn’t detest him any longer, I fantasized about Fred; I imagined him behind me, and I climaxed before he let me go, and now he was going to do the same, tormenting me to pleasure. “Good morning, Joan,” he said. "Rats," said Jojo soothingly. "Why do mice cry?" said Ethan, confused. "Is this house haunted?" Jennie Parno asked. "The ghost is looking for you the most, Jen," joked Jojo. "No need to joke. It's not funny," said Jennie, who was already shivering. He is most afraid of coming into contact with ghosts and other spirits. "Seriously, is this house haunted?" asked Salma.

Joan stood in the hallway, and my breath caught at the sight of her. She looked like she’d been through hell and back. Her clothes were torn and burned, dark scorch marks streaking across her shirt and jeans. Her face was pale, too pale, with dark circles under her eyes that looked like bruises. Her hair hung limp and tangled around her shoulders, and when she looked up at me, I saw something in her eyes that made my stomach drop. Pure, absolute fear. “Joan,” I breathed, reaching for her. “Oh my god, what happened? Are you okay? I tried to call you but someone else answered and ....”

“End this.” The silence that followed was deafening. Then— Click. I flinched. The gun had gone off. But I felt no pain. No burn. No coldness taking over. I blinked. Joan stood before me, staring down until her expression shifted into something unreadable. Her mouth parted slightly. Then her body crumpled to the ground, lifeless. Blood spread beneath her. I gasped as I watched Joan’s form collapse. Ferris had shot her instead. He was breathing heavily. His chest rose and fell like he’d run for miles. Slowly, his gaze turned to me—and this time, his eyes weren’t empty.

"Joan. Who did you send." "It wasn't supposed to scare her." "Our daughter spent two days in hospital." I stepped toward her. "She had a fever from fear. She is six years old and someone crouched down to her at a school gate and threatened me through her." I stopped close. "Who did you send." "It was supposed to be a message.” "It was a child."

It still seemed unbelievable. I leaned down and wrapped my fingers around her throat, squeezing just enough to cut off her air. "Listen to me, and listen carefully," I said, my voice calm, deliberate. "If Joan had died, you would have been joining her. And trust me—it wouldn’t have been an easy death." That’s when I saw it. The fear. It clung to her thick and suffocating, probably more real than the pain in her wrists. I could almost taste it.

My limbs look longer as I advance towards Heather. She screams before she turns, abandoning her friend as she runs for dear life. “That’s not even what happened.” I whisper, fear making me feel nauseous. What the fuck is going on? The room returns to normal and Heather runs to her mother, sobbing hysterically. “Fuck, even I’d be scared of that, but that wasn’t me.” I say clearly. “Visions can be distorted by fear. We see things differently,” Janaina says. “But your mind will hold the answers, will they not? You fought the unseen beast.”
