Klaus said during the trip home. “I have nothing to say,” I replied sternly. “You do believe me, right?” “It doesn’t matter what I believe,” I replied, “and I’d very much like to be left alone.” Indeed, I wasn’t sure what to believe. The Klaus I knew wouldn’t endanger the pack because of some random girl he pitied. And he was definitely not superstitious enough to do what he did because he believed in some strange prophecy from a goddess. There had to be something I was missing.

I tried my best not to even think of him during those months, and it felt like it was working. But seeing him now is bringing all of the memories back. Including the feelings that come with them. The shame, the guilt, and the betrayal all come back in a single swoop. I lower my head to hide my face, but before I can even do that, Klaus looks straight at me. “I’m Klaus Slater,” he introduces himself in a calm, collected tone. “I will be your professor from now on. I take it that you just started to discuss the works of Charlotte Bronte?”

Klaus was seated on amongst the high twelve, because he was the head of the table. By his right hand was Markus Dane, his best friend and brother, as it ought to be. In the dark field, under the blood red moon that settled in the sky that rested above all their heads, Klaus's ears paid attention to the eerie whistling of the wings of the night, and the rustling of the trees, the sound of gossip amongst plants. He was not supposed to keep his ears on the plants and birds, but he would rather do that than listen to the gibberish that was being melted out by members of the lower twelve that were seated around their round table.

The man didn't mention the kidnapping though. "I am Klaus, good friend of both the Koba family and this scoundrel here." He looked at Jozef with a wide grin. "I heard you were back in town. Do you mind if I sit?" Jozef waved him into the booth and pulled Shaun even closer against his side, his hand at the back of her neck sending pleasurable skitters of awareness down her spine. Apparently Jozef had no qualms about public displays of affection. The guards hovered nearby until Jozef waved them away.

Well, only for a few more days, but still it was disgusting how they eyed me as if I was the next notch above their bedpost. “Champagne?” I asked, looking at the group. “Damn, I knew you were sexy, but not that sexy. My cock is so hard right now.” He stated. I was startled when the man struck Dash forcefully at the back of his head, causing him to nearly be thrown off his chair. “Don’t be a dickhead!” He then grabbed a glass from my tray. “Dane, stop being so polite. Maylea, one of the few female trainees, was quick on her feet but always left herself open, favouring her right side. “Imelda, you’re going against Jasper. Line up and practice defensive techniques. I have other places to be.” Jaspers's voice was sharp as he spoke to me. I rolled my eyes at him. I stripped off my metal guards and stood in my fighting leather. I should consider myself lucky it lasted this long. “Didn’t it ever cross your mind that I just don’t want to see your face?” Klaus looked thoughtful for a moment; he even frowned, thinking deeply. “No,” he shook his head. “I mean, come on. Just look at me,” he gestured with his forefinger over his face and body. “I’m Klaus Martinelli,” he announced, chest puffing out as if that explained everything. I made a gagging sound. Klaus pulled out the cooked bacon and hash brown from the skillets.

Klaus just shrugged his shoulders, his nonchalant expression contrasting with the concern in my eyes. "Nope, why?" he asked nonchalantly, taking a sip of his red cup filled only with alcohol. "That bitch, Jessica, keeps bothering me by asking for Tyler," I grumbled, frustration evident in my voice. "You can just tell her to back off, and she'll stop," he simply said, leaning in closer to be heard. "Do you hate her that much?" I asked, my voice filled with genuine curiosity. Klaus’ intense gaze sent shivers down my spine. I had never seen him look so serious before.
