A lot of the YA stuff from a few years back felt very 'issue-driven,' but newer books, especially in fantasy or paranormal, are just letting queer characters exist and have messy, complicated relationships like anyone else. I'm thinking of something like 'A Marvellous Light'—it's a historical fantasy romance between two wizards, and the tension comes from the magic system and the mystery, not from their sexuality being a point of conflict. The romance itself—the pining, the trust-building, the intimacy—feels familiar to any romance reader, which normalizes it in a really powerful way.

Sometimes the portrayal is about exploring dynamics you don't see as much in straight pairings, too. Like, the careful negotiation of power and identity in an established trans character's relationship, or the specific kind of found-family intensity in a lot of sapphic sci-fi. It's less about shouting 'we're here!' and more about quietly expanding what a romantic plot can look like.

When the question of authentic LGBTQ+ representation comes up, I tend to think less about big mainstream breakout hits and more about the quieter books that seem written from the inside out. A novel that really got under my skin for this was 'The Heart’s Invisible Furies' by John Boyne. It follows one gay man’s entire life from 1940s Ireland onward, and the authenticity isn't just in the historical accuracy—it’s in the exhausting, grinding weight of a hidden self, the missed connections, the way joy is both hard-won and fleeting. It feels lived-in, not researched.

Another one is 'Pet' by Akwaeke Emezi, which is technically YA but operates on a completely different plane. It has a trans girl protagonist, but the story isn't about her transition; it's a surreal fantasy about monsters in a supposedly utopian city. Her identity is woven into the fabric of her character without being the sole point of conflict, which is a kind of authenticity I crave—where queer characters get to have adventures unrelated to their queerness. It’s a subtle but powerful shift from most of the 'issue books' I grew up with.

Then there’s 'Less' by Andrew Sean Greer, which won the Pulitzer and somehow still feels underrated in these conversations. It’s a comedy about a failing gay writer fleeing his ex’s wedding, and the authenticity is in the specific, slightly pathetic, deeply relatable midlife crisis of it all. His sexuality is a fact, not a tragedy or a triumph, and the humor is born from character, not stereotype. These books work because the authors aren't just checking representation boxes; they're telling full, messy human stories where the characters happen to be queer.

I keep circling back to narrator performance being half the appeal of an audiobook, especially for queer stories. A lot of the big-name, traditionally published stuff gets adapted, but sometimes the narrator feels disconnected, like they're doing an accent instead of a lived experience. I've started seeking out projects where the author narrates their own memoir or where the casting explicitly involves queer actors from similar backgrounds as the characters.

For memoir, T Kira Madhe narrating 'Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls' is a stunning example—her voice carries this raw, unfiltered ache and humor that a third party couldn't replicate. For fiction, I thought 'The House in the Cerulean Sea' was lovely, but the audiobook for 'A Marvelous Light' by Freya Marske, narrated by David Thorpe, clicked better for me because the narration captured that specific early-1900s British queer tension without making it a caricature. Gideon in 'Gideon the Ninth' is a whole mood, and Moira Quirk's narration absolutely sells that brash, disaster lesbian voice. It's less about the plot being 'authentic' and more about the voice in your ear feeling like it gets it.

I've also had luck with smaller presses or direct-to-audio platforms that seem to have more thoughtful casting. The difference is palpable when you hear a nonbinary character voiced by a nonbinary actor—the cadence, the pronoun delivery, it just lands differently.
