As he slammed the door shut, he snarled back at them. “What were they? Baby nightmares?” Luke asked as he stared at the door. He had a green flashlight rigged to a strap on his forearm. They used green light rather than white because it interfered less with their night sight as they shifted from skin to fur. If they were caught in someone else’s beam, it wouldn’t blind them.

Sure enough, it was gone. The image of him smiling at the clerk came to mind, along with the warm compliments about what a loving couple we were. That scene kept replaying in my head. I stood there in a daze, the bitterness in my chest slowly settling. I quietly told myself that maybe this was all just a one-sided crush on Serena's end. After dinner, Lucas suddenly set down his fork and said, "I have to work late tonight at the observatory. I need to observe a star that's quite rare."

Eric believed her without a doubt, and the next second, he took out a lighter and tossed it onto my pile of stuff. The flames roared to life in an instant. He had a buzzcut, something that looked like he did it himself, with impeccable green eyes. “Don’t mind Ed,” he said, a small smile playing on his lips. “He was born that way, and we can’t seem to change it.” His accent was so thick, I had to concentrate a little to understand what he said. “I’m Liam,” he ended, holding out his hand.

Horrible, pointed teeth, leaving trails of saliva and disgust all over me as I resist. I dig deep, anger, fear, a sheer need to survive, and put all I can into throwing it off. Suddenly aglow with blue light coming from within, mustering all I have. I ignite like an imploding light globe, and the energy explosion throws my foe feet in the air.
