Novel & Cerita Love's Deception

I haven't gotten around to 'Love's Deception' yet, but I've seen it come up a lot in my circles. The title itself gives away a major trope, obviously, so if you're burnt out on big secret-and-lie plots in romance, you might wanna skip it. I read a few sample chapters and the prose felt a bit... clunky to me? Like the dialogue was trying too hard to be witty and kept pulling me out of the story.

That said, my friend who devours enemies-to-lovers and second-chance romances absolutely inhaled this book in one sitting. She said the third-act conflict was predictable but executed with enough emotional punch that she didn't mind. So I guess it depends on your tolerance for melodrama and whether you find the main character's choices frustrating or relatable. I'm probably going to wait for a sale or a library copy before I commit.

It's probably a controversial take, but I struggled with 'Love's Deception'. I see a lot of hype for it, especially in the arranged marriage romance circles, but the main conflict relies on this drawn-out misunderstanding that started to feel manufactured after a while. The male lead's 'deception'—keeping his true identity secret—goes on for so many chapters that the female lead's eventual forgiveness didn't land for me. It made her seem less like a resilient character and more just passively accepting. I skimmed the last third.

That said, the first half had some genuinely sweet moments. The writing around their forced proximity in the fake marriage setup was fun, with good banter. If you're the kind of reader who can enjoy the journey and not get too hung up on a frustrating third-act conflict, you might find it worthwhile. For me, the payoff wasn't there, and I'd recommend something like 'The Unwanted Wife' for a similar trope executed with a bit more emotional logic.

I kept hitting dead ends looking for this one until I tried Audible, and that's where it finally popped up. 'Love's Deception' is on there, read by Emilia Vance—her voice really fits the main character's inner turmoil, especially in those tense family dinner scenes. It's included with a Plus membership, I believe, which is handy.

I remember checking my library's Libby app first, but they only had the ebook. The weird thing is, it doesn't seem to be on Google Play Books or Apple Books at all, which is unusual for a romance title. If you're not into subscriptions, I think you can buy it outright on Chirp sometimes when they have sales, but I haven't seen a sale on it in a while.

My advice is to search the exact title with quotes; I found a bunch of similarly named self-published books cluttering the results when I didn't.

Yeah, Audible was my solution, though the sample playback sounded a bit tinny on my phone—had to adjust the audio quality settings in the app to get it right.
