I ran with Shino’s map clutched tightly in my hand, glancing down at it whenever the path split and forcing myself to understand the rough circles, crooked lines, and hurried arrows he had drawn. It barely looked like a proper map, more like a secret scratched down by someone who expected the world to collapse before he could explain it properly, but his directions echoed in my head and slowly turned the messy markings into something I could follow. The bent line meant the trail behind the water barrels, the double circle meant the storage hut, and the sharp mark near the edge of the page meant the place where Luna and Brielle had supposedly been taken for safety.

The map spins and becomes brighter. The gold writing on the map dance off the map and into the air surrounding us. It is beautiful to watch but also a little scary.
