"You kidnapped me! You're talking about forcing me to marry you! How am I supposed to calm down?"

He turned back slowly, his eyes wide with a frantic, sweating desperation. "Yes?" The ugly mutt asked obediently which made me let a soft, disarming smile play on my lips. The kind a spider gives a fly. "You can't leave like this. I’ll accept your apology and forget about that little bout of rudeness from earlier. I suggest we act like adults and sort this out properly. So... Do you want to make a bet?"

"So what must you do to calm us down?" I tilted my head up thoughtfully and mulled over what I could do to calm his wolf down. If Alaric could calm down, he'd naturally relax and forgive me. There were only three things I could do that would help but I knew the first was the best option.

My hands shook while I made the call; the domestic acts felt like armor. Marcus sat beside me through all of it. When the calls were done and the emails had been forwarded and the marshals had been notified, he took me into his arms with a desperation that made my knees go weak. “I am so sorry,” he said into my hair. “They had no right to touch that. No right.” “You can’t be sorry about their cruelty,” I answered, my voice steady with the small ferocity that had become our currency. “You can be sorry about anything you did to keep us safe that you now regret. But not for being angry.”

Chelsea’s voice cracked through my anger sharply enough to stop me. I turned back irritably. “What?” “Please Calm down.” “I am calm.” She raised one eyebrow. “No, you are preparing for murder.” I opened my mouth. Then shut it. Because... annoyingly... she was not entirely wrong. If I saw Marcellus right now and he so much as winked at me, I'd strangle him to death and proudly spend my time in the dungeons for it. Chelsea stepped closer, her expression calm but firm. “We cannot move recklessly so you can't handle this yourself.”

Marshal's heart ached as he watched her, feeling helpless to ease her pain. He took a step closer mustering the courage, his arms opening to envelop her. This time unlike what he had expected , Jasmine didn't pull away. She let him hold her, her body trembling against his as she cried. Marshal held her tightly, his eyes closed as if doing so absorbed her pain. He didn't try to offer words of comfort or explanations. He just held her, letting her know that he was there for her. Slowly, Jasmine's sobs began to subside replaced by ragged breathing and an occasional sniffle.
