Her thoughts felt tangled, pulling her in directions she did not want to follow.
“You do not know what I am,” she said.
“No,” he agreed. “But neither do you.”
That unsettled her deeply.
Elsewhere in the fortress, Alaric stood alone in his private chamber, staring out into the night. He had left Elysia’s room because remaining there had become dangerous. Not to her, but to himself.
The curse lay beneath his skin as it always had, a constant presence he had learned to live with. It was absolute. It did not warn. It did not fail. It killed instantly and without exception.
