Darren leaned toward Lando. “Such a drama queen,” Darren sighed.
Lando snickered behind his hand. “Does Nonno Alec really not have favorites?”
Papa’s expression shifted. Not soft, exactly. Papa didn’t do soft in public. He did subtle rearrangements of danger into warmth. “No,” Papa said firmly, his tone low but gentle. “Children are not ranked.”
That stabbed somewhere behind my ribs, quick and rude. I hid it with a grin. “See? That means I remain undefeated because there was never a competition,” I said cheerfully.
