Hard. Certain. The crowd gasps as one. Damon catches it in stride. One second. He taps it into the empty net. The horn explodes. Game over. We win. The arena erupts into chaos. Gloves fly. Sticks clatter. Teammates crash into us from every direction. But in the middle of it, Damon grabs my helmet and presses his forehead against mine. “You idiot,” he breathes, half laughing, half shaking. “You were open,” I say.

“They don't look happy to see us.” “Where are Jack and Herne?” Warren asked as he peered at the outside wall. It was made from brick and mortar. He wondered if he could summon Archon's clutch of talons to scale the building. “They are manning the weapons of the Scald Crow. Some of those dog people escaped and they may come back with friends. I don't feel like being caught in a large-scale assault. I'd bet against the Scald Crow in that situation.” “It's too bad Theria is down for the moment. She could fly up and talk to them.”

I ignore him and turn to bar duty. There are cases of beer and pop under the counter. The newly bought hard liquor is lined up against the back wall. There's a club emblem on that same wall above the bottles. It's the same one the club members wear on their vests. It's actually pretty damn cool, but fuck if I tell any of them that. It's a crow on motorcycle handlebars with two skulls in front. Desert Crows is written on a banner across the top. The design is in a black circle. It looks ominous, which is what the person who designed it was going for.

It looks as normal as it could be. "I did it..." she whispered when the crow stopped squawking and fixed its gaze upon her. Karmina held the candle just a tad bit closer and noticed the blood that stained its dark feathers was also covered in black ink. She reached out cautiously and ran her fingers along its feathers, the black tainted blood smeared her fingers. As she smiled, the sense of relief washing over her, the crow's body expanded. First in its belly, then its head, until its body ruptured. She let out a scream as feathers, blood and bones splattered her and the inside of her hut.

The council chamber was cavernous, its stone walls adorned with banners bearing the crest of Arindale—a golden falcon soaring against a crimson backdrop. Emilia’s footsteps echoed as she entered, the heavy wooden doors closing behind her. The chamber was already alive with voices, nobles and advisors engaged in animated conversation.

The beautiful decorations, the smiles, the laughter and shouting, no one seem to notice it wasn’t complete. I slowly walked in, my steps slow but deliberate towards the pack’s garden, my sadness and pain overcome with happiness. He decorated all this for me, just as I got to the pack’s garden, I could hear people cheering and staring at something.
