Shadows cannot be destroyed they only wait, and they remember.” Aria’s chest burned, sweat beading along her brow, hair plastered to her face, yet she did not relent. The shadows pressed again, more aggressively, their whispers sharp and mocking, trying to erode her focus. But with Damon beside her, guiding, warning, and lending strength, she was unstoppable. Finally, the tendrils recoiled, shadows dissipating like smoke in sunlight, leaving the forest silent, mist curling lazily now, almost peaceful. The figure, however, remained, watching, waiting, its expression unreadable.

KAREN’S POV The shadows shouldn’t have failed. I kept replaying that thought as I stood by the window, fingers digging into the sill until the wood cracked beneath my nails. Below me, the courtyard shimmered with moonlight, silver dust coating the stones like frost. My shadows—my loyal, obedient creations—had never failed before. They were supposed to be silent, invisible, efficient. But this time, they came back in pieces, ripped apart by a force I didn’t even understand.
