JAX I wake up in a cold sweat, panting as my eyes adjust to the darkness of my room. All the talk lately about the shadow pack and strategizing how to align our defenses with Denver has been seeping into my nightmares, robbing me of sleep. I’m lucky in that I don’t have any personal experience with the shadow pack thus far, but in my nightmares Alpha Xavier is this larger-than-life villain, his followers these soulless, twisted monsters who kill without remorse. Then again, from what I’ve heard about the shadow pack, the version of them in my dreams may not be too far off.

Instead, a sneer played at the corner of his mouth, and his deep eyes seemed to see right through me. As Xander stared at me, my heart raced, and I nervously licked my lips. "I..." "Maybe in your eyes, I've been a volatile monster these past few years. So, as my unfortunate mate, you feel entitled to accuse me of whatever you think I've done." With a sneer still on his face, Xander carefully moved past me, scanning his surroundings. "I've never been able to forget that awful night when my parents died before my eyes. The nightmares have haunted me for two decades, a constant reminder not to forget my need for vengeance." Xander turned abruptly, locking eyes with me.

I said finally, breaking the silence. He quickly glanced at me. "Relax, Anna. I'm not even the target," he reassured me. "As far as the boss is concerned, I'm out there looking for his daughter's killer." "Killer?" I asked, feeling confused. Xavier sighed heavily. "Yeah. She killed herself last night. I guess she couldn't stand the fact that she got raped." I wanted to ask more questions, to continue the conversation, but my head and body had a mind of their own. I felt myself slipping into unconsciousness, and I tried to fight it, but the darkness consumed me.
