I replied, my voice low and gravelly from the tension of the day. “You have a helicopter, could have just flew your way back home.” Evelyn pointed out helpfully, sipping her juice. I chuckled. “It’s in for maintenance. And I just don't get to fly it however I want, just cause I own it.” We ate together. Della kept the conversation lively, talking about their day, the tour they took around the mansion. Evelyn added details with wide eyed enthusiasm, recounting every room and every weird sculpture she saw. “She thinks the marble lion in the library winked at her,” Kate added, amused. Looks like Evelyn and Kate were okay now. Last time, she complained about how Evelyn came out as weird to her.

Then her voice—cool and surgical. “Then bring her to me. Let’s finish what we started.” Evelyn stood at the edge of her old childhood street. Lights out. Windows shuttered. A house that had once been home now looked like a stranger wearing her memories.

Let me show you around.” I carried the phone, switching the camera as I began walking around the penthouse. Halfway home, Evelyn stirred, whimpering that she was hungry. "Shh," I soothed, pulling her into my lap. "Go back to sleep, sweetheart. I'll wake you when we get home, and we'll have something delicious." She nodded sleepily and dozed off again, her small body curled against mine. As dusk settled, we finally arrived at my apartment building. Olivia was waiting outside, her face lighting up when she saw our car. "About time!" she called out, rushing to meet us. "I was starting to think you'd run off with Marcus for some secret date!"
