The compound was always protected. We got to the range and unloaded our gear. We split off into six teams of ten, with Jax, Noah, Oliver, Nathan, John, and me as team leaders since we were the most proficient with our weapons and training. Although after the accident, I had doubted my own skills for a while. But Jax never let me give up. He pushed me to get back out on the range and pushed me to be even better.

Ben set up a small shooting range using smaller wood chips and drew a line on the ground about fifty steps away. “Try shooting the wood chips from this distance. We will slowly increase the distance to find your ideal range.” Fifty steps was quite the distance. They were no longer in the woodcutting area. Zen did not know if getting any further was wise but stood behind Sasha with Ben to observe. The wind blew gently, but Sasha had no hesitation. Even without a scope, she fired the gun six times in one breath. All three wood chips flew from their spot, and Ben raised his brow. Did she miss her first shots?

“Red dot sights are typically used for closer ranges, 100 yards or less.” “Depending on the rifle,” Em added, “they can be adequate up to 300 yards.” We were all looking up at the roofline. “If the shooter wasn’t on your roof, with the way the second story obstructs a straight view...” I looked from Viviana to Camila. “There. Someone was on your neighbor’s roof or in that window.” I pointed. “That’s the only possible vantage point.” “Do you know your neighbor?” Andrés asked.

Scott seethes, glaring at Jonathon. “Beginner’s luck” Jonathon laughs, giving Simone a smile. “Do you have something to say to me?” “46 points?” Emmett questions Vince in a whisper. “I didn’t think it was fair giving him a perfect score” Vince chuckles as Scott storms away without saying another word to Jonathon. “Truth is, it was harder to hit the bullseye when you aren’t in direct line of the target” he adds going back to the group of kids wanting to have a go at the shooting range.

I extended my arms, aimed the pistol, and fired at the shooting target. “So shooting range is your way of recuperating? You’re a little rusty.” Beck was right. It had been a while since I held and fired a gun. It was not that I needed to carry every day. That was why I hired Beck and Linden. Compared to them, it was a part of their job to maintain active. “I know.” I slid another magazine. “I hope you are not thinking of her father or Jasper while you are targeting the paper.” I fixed the goggle up and glared at him. “I might as well include you if you keep pissing me off.”

Our path led to a massive indoor archery range. It had twenty lanes. Each lane was clearly marked out to 150 meters plus there was approximately 20 meters of back space where the observers and archers waiting their turn congregated. I recognized plenty of the women present. There were also three men - the other male new hires. The rest of us had made it through Week One.

“I’m on my own side.” He nodded once. “That’s the only safe answer right now.” He stood, gesturing for me to follow him to the small indoor range at the far end of the study—soundproofed, targets already set. “First lesson: stance. Grip. Sight picture. Breathe. Then shoot.” I followed. But as I raised the gun—hands steadier than I expected—I couldn’t shake the feeling that every shot I learned today might one day be aimed at someone in this house.

Bryan shot his pistol three times, then pressed the button on the wall which drew his human cardboard target closer to where he was. “Not bad.” Kimberly shouted in the midst of the gunshots from other shooters, who we’re practicing in the shooting range. His target had a hole on the side of its head, on a shoulder and in the middle of its torso. “My turn.” She said after replacing the bullet ridden target with a new one, and pressing the button on the wall, which pushed it away till it got to forty meters away from where she stood.

"Not for the reason you think." After a long moment, he finally released me, but not before placing a kiss on my cheek. He flicked my collar playfully, a satisfied smile on his face. "You've done well for a first session," he said, stepping back to give me space. "But we should take a break. Extended practice can strain a beginner's muscles." He unlocked the chain securing the gun, then called out to someone I couldn't see. "Adjust to moving targets, please." The range transformed before my eyes. Eight targets appeared, seven of them moving quickly in erratic patterns, while one varied its speed unpredictably.

I think my disappointment will be much worse if that were the case, not because I don't like animals, but it isn't exactly a good way to blow off steam. Well this… I don't know what to make of it. “The place is good and ready to be used, Shark.” Obren's voice resounds. I cut my eyes to him, watching him edge back to the front gate. The range is an open space with the targets set several meters away from the shed, standing tall and unshaken even as the sun blasts off of it. As Obren's footfall fades, I turn to Michael with my hands resting on my waist, head cocked aside.
