I mumbled something incoherent, and stared blindly at the screen, my fingers moving on autopilot.
And then, like a dream, a shadow fell over our desk. A cold wave of presence that made the fine hairs on my arms stand up. Professor Kai was standing there, his imposing frame blocking the light. “How’s it going over here?” he asked. His voice was low, too calm, a flat lake hiding treacherous currents underneath.
“Uh, we’re good,” I managed, my voice a hoarse croak barely above a whisper.
“Urm, sir?” Sarah interjected, all false sweetness. “How do we reconsider this conditional loop?” She pointed a manicured finger at a line of code on her screen.
