If only Rachel could understand, see the sparkle in their son’s eyes.
But a small sliver of doubt rippled through him. Because maybe Rachel was right. Patrick was a people-pleaser, after all. He hated disappointing folks, especially his parents, always willing to do his best for them. Maybe Black River Falls was too much for him. Maybe he was scared but was putting on a good show for his parents, for him, especially.
He squeezed Patrick’s shoulders again. “Y’know, it’s been a heckuva day, Pat. A great one, and I’m proud. Don’t need to ride this one, if you don’t want to. Got nothing to prove to me, pal.”
