Raymond moves in closer, and for the first time, I observe the strain in his own body. He appears distressed, ambivalent.
To my astonishment, he kneels next to me.
I remain still. I hardly breathe while I see him watching Mr. Henry.
He mutters curses quietly. He raises his hand, and I flinch, fearing he's going to act violently.
Rather, he softly places his fingers on Mr. Henry's neck, assessing his pulse.
"He will make it," Raymond mumbles, primarily to himself. "I will arrange for my personal doctor to examine him."
