As the gold-and-sapphire light of the Core-Nexus settled, the digital constructs of the old network solidified into something tangible. We were standing in a version of Coldwater that looked like it had been painted by a memory vivid, warm, and pulsing with a life that no corporate algorithm could ever simulate. The "First Road" had become a dusty, winding track that led toward a horizon filled with rolling hills and the distant, familiar silhouettes of a city that was finally free.

Alice used it to explain heartache, but I was using it to explain everything stupid they did. Change finally came when humans completely destroyed the beautiful world they lived on, and they had to leave. It took time for the world to heal once they were gone, but it healed. Supernatural creatures had mostly stayed behind and where there were once filthy, noisy cities, they made their homes. They started over. They rebuilt what was broken. It was an exciting time and I sometimes wondered what had happened to humans. I knew deep down they would one day return, but for now I was enjoying seeing pixies and mountain trolls working side by side to rebuild.
