His smile was warm and familiar, reminding me of the more than two thousand days we had spent side by side. I had barely taken a step when several glowing lines of text suddenly flashed across my vision. "Don't go. There's a sulfuric acid trap in the grove."

And in New Haven, 1,186 people—plus four infants—prepared for whatever came next. Not with certainty. Not with guarantees. Not with perfection. But with hope. Real, hard-earned, sustainable hope. I whispered behind my breath and yet stand on the pavement near WPD while the drizzle sprinkle on me still. Some people bump into me in a hurry and some accidentally bumped into me because I was standing in the middle of the night hour. Within my mind was full of wishes that I and my new partner in WPD will get along and hoping Wayne will never hook up with some woman randomly. I walk into the entrance of my apartment but before that - I witness homeless citizens smoking near the alleyway of the apartment and some are lassies that are renting themselves on the others side of the pavement. Winter City is losing hope.

“Core readings spiking! The ship is destabilizing, but it’s redirecting energy to the elites. They’re getting stronger!” Damien fired at an elite breaking through the inner door. “Hold the line! Hope, push harder!” Hope screamed. “It hurts… he’s showing me his version of the future. No family. Only soldiers. But I feel all of you. That’s what makes me different!” Theo took a glancing hit but stayed up. “We’re with you, Hope! Don’t let him in!” Seraphina shielded the infants. “The younger ones are glowing in response.
