She didn’t know then that some silences weren’t empty. They were waiting. Waiting for the moment they could break everything open.

Chapter 6: The Weight of Silence The car moved steadily through the quiet night. The city lights glared past the windows. The roads were less crowded now, the noise of the conference long left behind. Inside the car, the silence felt heavy. Marcus sat on the driver's seat. His hands rested firmly on the steering wheel, his posture straight, eyes fixed on the road ahead. He had learned over the years when to speak and when not to. In the back seat, Lucas sat slightly turned to the side.

No quiet correction or gentle redirect that could change what it meant. The silence she left behind wasn't empty. It was the sound of something finally, completely finished.

Then he turned back toward me. “Vincent will try to control the rhythm of the conversation today.” I leaned lightly against the back of one of the chairs. “How?” “By staying calm. By asking questions that appear harmless. By letting silence stretch longer than most people are comfortable with.” “That sounds very deliberate.” “It is.” Silas’s gaze sharpened slightly. “People reveal more than they realize when they feel the need to fill silence.” I thought about that. “And what should I do?” His answer came immediately.

They giggled and whispered. Silas walked up onto the stage and stood in front of all of them with his hands placed on his hips. He cleared his throat. All of them immediately stopped talking and all eyes were on him. Power radiated off of him and his voice was loud and clear as he spoke out to them, "We have a visitor."

My blood runs cold and the room turns dead silent for a moment before all hell runs loose. ***********************************************************************************************

Silence returns. But it is no longer suffocating. It is shelter.

Until they became silent. A very deafening silence. Why?
