The retinal scanner clicked as we passed, the only acknowledgment of our presence. Simon was already at the console, dragging it closer with one hand as he keyed in sequences with the other. He didn’t look up. His jaw was clenched, his stubble patchy, and his focus locked entirely on the projection forming above the table. The lights dimmed as the green display bloomed across the glass surface, casting shifting patterns on our faces like reflections off water. “This isn’t direct control,” Simon said. “They aren’t issuing new commands. They’re triggering systems that were built into people months or even years ago. The bell tones act as keys to doors that were already installed.”

The system was still offline, and I had no way to check his affection level. What if his affection was still at zero? I had to speed this up. The dating-sim had a two-month time limit, and my two months were almost over. If I failed the route, I would lose the entire ten-million prize. Maybe it was the alcohol. So my initial step is getting into the right room. Unfortunately, the locks on these doors are something that Rhys has fixed, with fingerprint scanners and 5-pin double lock mechanisms. But my father doesn’t know that when I started to realise what he was doing was wrong, Rhys granted me access to free prisoners without having him directly involved. Now I just have to hope and pray that he never took me off the system, and work out how to get onto the other side to activate the scanner. While looking around the room to find something that can help me, I hear the door mechanism start to click.

Chapter 39 Carlos led me through the different sections of Karolinska, narrating everything with the energy of a tour guide who took his job way too seriously. “This right here,” he gestured dramatically to a modern, glass-walled building, “is the simulation lab. You know, where they make you sweat through high-pressure emergency scenarios that will have you questioning every life decision you’ve ever made.” I smirked. “Sounds promising.” “Oh, it is,” he said, tossing his hair back with a flourish. “They even have artificial intelligence programs for patient interactions. It’s both mind-blowing and mildly terrifying.”

He was a distributed concept being evaluated from multiple directions simultaneously. Raven stepped closer immediately. “Ethan, don’t overextend.” He shook his head slightly. “I’m not extending anything.” A pause. “It’s already doing it.” --- The system pulsed again, and this time the chamber’s structure shifted in a way none of them had seen before. Instead of branching outward or inward, it stabilized into stacked coherence layers—each one running a full version of reality simulation with different assumptions about intent, consequence, and value. Lucian rubbed the back of his neck. “Okay… I officially don’t understand what I’m looking at anymore.”

I let them ramble for a few more seconds before taking a deep breath, and tapped my knuckle on the glass car window to distract myself from the nerves that were rolling through my body. “Let her speak.” Simons voice finally sounded through the car, the dark rumble like a warning before a storm. He was more tense than normal, and I could see it in the way his shoulders were squared up. I gave him a small smile to thank him, and looked down to fumble with my fingers nervously

Steve called out, seeing the expression on his face. "Yeah, right, but I'm sure you have one at your office, Steve," Simon responded instead. Steve noticed the shift and the look in his eyes right before he had continued the conversation. There was no need to press; he would come out with it when he was ready, he thought. "Of course, I needed to check something, and I can't go into the office today," Steve replied. The system set was a sophisticated piece of technology that only a few persons had access to. It offered a wide range of functions beyond the contemporary personal computers.
