With that, he turned and left, abandoning us in the tense quiet. We were left utterly speechless. I had never heard of the Fading before. Was it just me, or was this a closely guarded secret? “You really are still green,” Everine muttered, shaking her head. “Experiencing the Fading means you did something against the Goddess’ will. Like making a deal with the God of the Underworld and the Creator of Vampires, Hades.” She scoffed with vicious mockery. “Probably to secure the Duke and Duchess’ title. How pathetic. She might as well get eliminated now.”

It was an extremely hot day in December.It hadn't rained in a long time.Sitting under the tree,seeking protection from the scorching sun,Dinny looked down at the once hydrated land.It had lost its usual beauty,lifeless and showing all signs of dehydration."Nothing lasts forever.Not life,not hardships,not seasons,nothing at all" Dinny said to herself,in a low voice.

Fading. “She’s slipping,” I said. The words came out cracked. Brynne’s head snapped toward me. He felt it too, down his own bond to her … the dimming. I saw it land on his face like a blow. “How long?” he asked. “I don’t know.” I didn’t want to say it. “Not long. Her heart … it’s getting slower. The blood’s wearing off.” Brynne didn’t even break stride. He lifted his own hand to his mouth and bit down, hard, tearing into the flesh of his palm until the blood welled up dark and fast.

So untouchable. My eyes finally gave up the futile struggle and I faded. Faded faraway into oblivion.

“Slowly. Over time. Until the territory it’s sitting in starts to wake it up the rest of the way.” I thought about a dry fountain running water. About words scratching themselves into plaster. About a brand that had gone from faint gold glow to blazing heat in the space of three weeks. The degradation hadn’t been slow. It had been accelerating. “The full moon,” I said. Vesper’s expression shifted. Something moved through it that I hadn’t seen yet. Not surprise. Not concern. Something closer to the look of someone watching an event they’ve been tracking for a very long time finally arrive on schedule.
