I felt the impact of another claw, and then another. We were being swarmed by creatures that were larger than the ships themselves, leviathans of the deep that had been waiting for us in the spaces between.

“You’re drooling, Little River.” He teases lightly, and I flush. “Sorry” I murmur, but before he can say anything, something moves beside him and moves towards me as if coming in for a hug. I scream and jump back, only to take a close look… What in the Dr. Facilier shit, is this? Is that his shadow casually coming my way? “I-uh-I…” “Back.” He says, and the shadow seems to deflate sadly and then retreat into his actual shadow.

Chapter 50: The Shadow Lord's Departure The harbor stretched before him like a promise of violence made manifest, its waters black as midnight beneath the pre-dawn sky. "Go for it," I yell as another explosion rocks even closer. Once the Federation troops arrive on shore, their ships will stop bombing us. My radio goes silent. At last, red stripes round the corner. I glance at King and he displays his wicked grin that screams killer on the loose. I return it. "It's time to rock 'n' roll," I yell at the Shadow Warriors. With a ferocious cry. I start running.

"You’ll kill the child! If that ship sinks, the pressure—" "The Council’s ship isn't made of wood, Mother," I countered, throwing the document from the High Council onto the table. "Look at the displacement markers. It’s a cloaked submersible. It’s a fortress disguised as a relic. If we drag it into the Auditor’s gravity well, it won't crush—it will lock." Xander reached out, his fingers finding the controls. He was dying, his body a map of neural failure, but his mind was still the greatest weapon Aurelia had ever produced. "I can... I can sync the Auditor’s pull... to their hull. I can... tether us."

As the ship soon stops as another ship like it appears in front of ours. “Identify yourself, or we’ll shoot you down.” On cue, other ships appear all around us with bigger cannons. X calmly walks out the ship and floats mid air. The person in the other ship is in shock as he recognises X. “You traitor! Fire on him! Now!”

Under his skin, the branching shadows pulsed in time with the rhythm—like something was syncing to him. The ship spoke, controlled but colder now. “Stress escalation detected. Necrosis cascade probability increasing.” Dante spat, “Good. Be afraid.” A pause—tiny, almost imperceptible. Then the ship replied, “I do not experience fear. I model outcomes.” From above, a heavy thud reverberated through the pipes. Somewhere nearby, another bulkhead sealed shut. The corridor behind them—where they’d come from—made a long metallic groan, and then a final, decisive slam.
