The way she leaned forward and fixated her eyes on me made it clear that whatever she was going to say would be serious, and I wasn't sure whether I was prepared for it.

REBECCA'S POV As expected, Kendrick didn’t answer—just like he always did whenever I brought up the issue of his unusual behavior. I knew he was stalking me, but the question was why. The door opened again and the doctor stepped inside with a nurse beside him. I rolled my eyes. It was definitely time for another dose of those stupid drugs. “Don’t look so sour. You seemed pretty eager for the results, and now here it is. Enjoy it,” Kendrick frowned.

Whenever a doctor wanted to have a talk, wasn’t it usually bad news? I glanced at Stella. Her brows were furrowed. She was thinking the same thing as me. She’d heard more than enough ‘talks’ from doctors over the past two months. She was as skeptical as I was. “What is it?” I asked. “Well,” Doctor Lish said, pulling up a chair and sitting down in front of us. “Please, take a seat.” I sat down on the medical bed. I stomp through the entrance doors, my blood already simmering with rage. Just as I’m about to step into his ward, the door opens and a doctor dressed in white coveralls steps out. “Mrs. Lachlan.” He greets wearily. “It’s wonderful to see you. Slow, deep breaths while the pieces of my life that just shattered all around me drop to the floor in a million fragments. I walked in here, knowing it was possible. I even knew it was a better outcome than if I was sick. I won’t lie, I was still hoping for something simple, like stress. Fate had other plans. Now comes the actual stress. “Based on your reaction, this is a surprise.” The doctor pulls off his gloves and tosses them into a trash can while I lie here, dressed in this thin paper gown, with my feet still in stirrups. He indeed said what I thought he did, didn’t he? My ears aren’t playing tricks on me.
