Owen's building appears thirty minutes later. Brick. Modest. A building made for teachers and nurses and people who work real jobs for real money. Not where I expected a federal agent to live. Even a suspended one. I park across the street. Watch the entrance. I cross the street before I can reconsider. His apartment is 3B. Third floor. No elevator. I take the stairs two at a time. The hallway smells like cooking and old carpet. Someone's playing music too loud. A baby cries somewhere behind closed doors.

My Abbi was the best! The compound has three apartments in it, and before Addah Tanaya left, we occupied the one with three bedrooms, a large living room, a kitchen, and a beautiful porch overlooking the yard. After Tanaya got married, Ammi claimed the apartment was too big for her all alone, since I planned to move to the other apartment with two bedrooms. I needed the space and the privacy. And so, we left the old apartment and moved into the other two in the compound.

They're both the best. Dad pulls the car up outside the apartments where Zoe and I live. It's not a high rise, we both wanted something that was more cute and cosy looking and found this area. The block is only four flights high with just twenty individual apartments in it. The building is made of brick and glass and each apartment has its own separate balcony, we all have trellis dividers and on ours we have an array of plants climbing up it with some small planters hanging off. Why bother going here? My apartment was quite cramped. It was the cheapest one I could find in the city, and I couldn't afford anything bigger. The bigger the apartment, the higher the cost. By the time Conrad receives the picture, he was amazed. The walls are sky blue, it had windows, the whole apartment is fully furnished and the kitchen is equipped with everything I needed. He then thinks about the price of the apartment since it looks too good to be expensive.
