Hungrier. Waiting.

I love you. I had spent years of my life desperately waiting to hear those exact words. I had waited for them on those dark nights when the electricity was cut off in our tiny rented apartment. I had waited for them when my back was peeling from hauling heavy freight at the warehouse, in so much pain I couldn't straighten my spine. I had waited for them when I stared down at that slice of mango cake at the celebratory dinner. And I had even waited for them the exact moment that HR disciplinary notice was blasted out to the entire company.

Jason stood in the yard, lifting his head to stare at the gloomy sky. He had really messed up.

I drawled out as I typed on the keyboard. I was a little unfamiliar with what was happening right now. I never dared to make Sandra wait for me whenever she offered to drive me, not even when there was something urgent to deal with. She'd get incredibly upset otherwise. This was the first time I made her wait for me. Sandra's expression changed a little the moment she heard the words "divorce agreement". I was getting a little stuck while figuring out how to amend the clauses, so I asked, "How do I write a clause that ensures neither party disrupts the other's life after the divorce?"

He stood in front of me, held my face between his hands and stared down at me. I waited, once again, I did. For what? This time I didn't know. But the moment he spoke, I knew, the wait was over. "You waited." He said. I gasped. " You waited." He breathed.

That night, after calmly arranging his affairs, I took sleeping pills and lay down next to him. “I’ll be with you soon.” When I opened my eyes again, there was a blinding white light. “Are you okay?” I shot upright and realized I was leaning over my desk. The girl next to me was wiping tears from her cheeks, choking on her sobs. “Emma just went off with Callum. Ugh, finally, love triumphs over everything.” My eyes widened as I looked down at the novel in front of me. It was open to the chapter titled “Please Wait for Me.” The illustration showed him holding my hand, standing by the sea, supporting each other through life.

she added. “Wait, what?”
