The Veil was not only testing the crown but also the resolve of those who served it. Aera traversed the halls with silent grace, observing, listening, and guiding. The crown emitted a faint glow, illuminating subtle manipulations and revealing concealed threads of influence. Every misstep, every hesitation, every trace of apprehension was meticulously recorded and analysed, preparing for the day when the Veil’s network would be unveiled.

But instead, I feel him tugging at something in my hair. My cheeks flush in embarrassment, I want to bury myself deep in the ground, never to come out again out of embarrassment. I open my eyes, curious to see what he is doing. I see him holding a red veil in his hand, the same one the maids had used to cover my hair earlier. He is staring at it, his brow furrowed, an unreadable expression on his face. I can't tell what he is thinking, and I find myself holding my breath, waiting for him to say something. The silence grows on, the tension in the room becoming stronger.

“No dying for anyone’s story. Not theirs. Not your own.” Then, she clapped her hands once. “Now that we’ve all flattered each other’s incompetence, mount up.” They scattered to their horses. Rin checked her straps, her knife, and the small pouch of quartz. Talia handed her one of the twisted cloth bundles. “This one’s the veil,” she said. “Keep it close. Don’t activate it until we’re near the pits. It’ll make you harder for Corven’s ritual to…focus.” Rin turned the bundle over in her fingers. It was ugly, threads pulling, the hook symbol deliberately crooked. It felt faintly wrong in her palm, like something left too long in shadow.

“It makes her the veil’s queen. The twinkling in her brown eyes dies down. Izzat squinted his eyes to analyze the source of the faint red glow that besieged Thalia's body. Nonetheless, that bright red aura enveloping her body, what is its identity? And, this is the first time he sees such a thing, and he admitted this. Izzat is actually a bit curious about it. It's not the usual sinister and forbidding aura of an evil spirit. Although, he does sense something as ominous and deadly as those. They were currently leaking out from the compelling aura around her.

I knew this veil. Not from this store, not from this morning. From years of waking up reaching for something that was not there. From a sketch I had made so many times that the paper had worn thin in the same places each time, the sweep of tulle, the way it moved in a wind that only existed in dreams, the particular quality of the light coming through it.
