’ Czer snarled within me, his voice edged with warning. But the way out was gone. The Rift pulsed, alive and aware. And then — I saw them… Figures in the distance, caught between time. Valerio reached behind him and handed Sera a small velvet box. “Open it,” he said without turning. She did. Inside was a ring. A blood-red ruby surrounded by black diamonds. Twisted metal shaped like thorns. He took it from the box, turned to her, and slid it onto her finger. Then looked Cael in the eye. “Now she’s my wife.” Cael’s smile faltered. Valerio’s never did.

The witches closed in, their laughter echoing like a chorus of nightmares. Something inside Aqua snapped. A surge of dark energy, unfamiliar and terrifying, welled up within her. She felt her pendant grow hot against her skin, the clear crystal turning black as smoke. The air around her crackled with raw power as she turned back towards the attackers, her fear morphing into a blinding rage.

He had sleek dark hair that swept down his back smoothly and she took a jerky step backwards when his milky white eyes focused on her.
