I crossed to the shutter anyway. “What came?”
“The fog,” she whispered. “It’s red.”
The word didn’t feel right. Fog was supposed to drift, not hunt.
But when I pushed the shutter open, I saw it rolling across the valley in thick, living waves. It curled up the walls like fingers, testing every crack and crevice. When it touched the torches, the flames shrank and died.
