THE WRITING ELENA'S POV I begin in February, on a Tuesday, in the study with the door closed and the botanical illustration book on the shelf where it has lived since I moved in and my father's letter in the drawer and a new legal pad on the desk. I have been preparing for this for months. Not in any organized, systematic way — I have not been outlining or planning in the way I would approach a professional document. I have been living with it, in the specific way that you live with something that needs to be written by carrying it close until the carrying becomes the preparation.

The city was quiet past midnight, the usual hum of traffic softened to distant murmurs. In her flat, Amara sat cross-legged on the edge of her bed, a stack of cream-colored stationery spread before her, pens scattered like weapons in a war she fought silently. Outside the window, streetlights spilled pools of gold across the damp pavement, reflecting the tumult of thoughts in her mind. She wrote something on it and passed it to her. Elena muttered a thanks to her as she left and walked back to her friends. "What did she say?'
