Just above her hipbone was a jagged gray mark that rose up to cover the bottom of her ribcage, its jagged edges flaring out toward her stomach and back. Two nurses came in and stayed nearby while she rested. Xena bit down hard on her lower lip. Then she suddenly lifted her left hand and exposed the inside of her wrist. Six old scars cut across it, uneven in depth and shape, ugly and impossible to miss. The nurses saw them too and exchanged a quick glance. They couldn’t help wondering whether those six wrist scars had something to do with Felix. Xena stared at them as if they were proof of every wrong she had suffered.
