LOGINI sat in the idling convertible, watching Chloe walk slowly out of the school through the parking lot.
I felt guilt twisting in my chest, if that was possible. That was my life she was walking back into. The stained carpet, the smell of ginger and old books, and the constant, crushing feeling of being invincible.
I hit the gas, the engine roaring as I sped away. I wanted to outrun the guilt by driving until the image of my own sad face in the rearview mirror vanished. But as the wind whipped my new blonde hair across my face, I realized I couldn't run away from a body I was currently wearing.
I slowed down after two blocks. Chloe, get in, I said.
“Maya,” Chloe would drive like she owns the road, not like she’s escaping a crime scene. Chloe shot back.
I pulled the car over to the side of the road for a second, trying to steady my breathing.
"So," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking as she used my vocal cords. "What happened after I ran out? Did Jaxon... did he say anything about me?"
I gripped the steering wheel tighter. My knuckles were white. "He didn't ask if you were okay, if that’s what you mean. He mostly talked about himself. And... he wants me to come over."
Chloe’s head snapped toward me, her thick glasses sliding down her nose. "To his place? Today?"
"Yeah. I guess he wants to hang out. Or whatever it is you guys do," I said, trying to sound nonchalany even though my heart was skipping.
"Maya, you have to go," Chloe pleaded, grabbing my arm. Her eyes were wide behind my lenses. "Please. Don't ruin this for me. I love him, and if he thinks I’m blowing him off, he’ll get bored. I don't want to lose him."
I looked at at my own face and felt a wave of guilt. "Chloe, I don't think I can. I’m literally in your body. It feels... wrong."
"Please! Just for today? Just act like me. Be sweet. He won't suspect a thing if you just keep smiling."
I sighed, pulling the car over near my house. "Okay fine, just for you."
I pulled out the pink iPhone and shot a quick text to Jaxon: See you in ten, babe.
As I pulled up to the curb of my old house to drop her off, I saw a Tristan standing at our front porch. He was leaning against the railing, a book in his hand, looking exactly like the only person who had ever seen me as a human being.
I had been in love with Tristan since the tenth grade, and he was the only one who didn't join in when people called me names.
"Wait," I grabbed Chloe before she reached for the door handle. "That’s Tristan."
Chloe looked at the neighbor and shrugged. "So? He’s just your neighbor."
"No, he's... he's important," I said, my voice urgent. "Chloe, listen to me. Tristan is the only kind person in my life. Please, don't just ignore him. You have to stall him, talk to him, anything. Just make sure he doesn't think I've turned into a jerk."
Chloe looked at Tristan, then back at me. A slow, mischievous look crossed my old face. "You like him, don't you?"
"Just... go," I muttered, my face heating up. Be nice.
"Fine," Chloe said, hopping out of the car. I'll play the part of the 'sweet neighbor girl.' You go play the 'perfect girlfriend.
I watched her walk toward Tristan, he looked up and smiled that genuine smile that used to be just for me.
I put the car in gear and drove away toward Jaxon’s house, feeling like I was leaving my heart on a porch while I went to go live a lie.
I pulled into Jaxon’s driveway, and just sat there. My hands were still shaking.
I looked in the visor mirror. My face was perfect. I practiced smiles.
The front door was already open. Jaxon was waiting, leaning against a marble pillar like he was posing for a photoshoot. When he saw me, his eyes lit up.
"There she is," he said, walking toward me. He didn't wait for a greeting. He just slid his arms around my waist and pulled me against him.
For years, I had wondered what it would feel like to be in his arms.
"You’re acting so weird today, Chlo," he whispered. "First the 'breakout' excuse, then avoiding me at lunch. Are you trying to make me chase you? Because it’s working."
He leaned in to kiss me, and I turned my head, his lips landing on my cheek instead.
"I'm just... tired, Jaxon," I lied, stepping out of his grip. I needed to not be touched by him. "School was a lot today."
"Okay," he muttered, the charm flickering for a second as he looked annoyed. "Come on, Mark and the guys are in the back. We're just hanging out."
The afternoon at Jaxon’s wasn't as bad as I had expected. Once we got to the backyard, the tension eased. We sat by the pool, and for a second, I forgot I was a fraud. Jaxon was being attentive, feeding me grapes and talking about a summer trip to the lake. I felt like I was finally part of the world I’d watched from the sidelines for years.
"You seem… stressed," Jaxon said, leaning back. "Let’s get out of here. Let’s go grab a bite, just us.”
Chloe's POV By the time the glowing digits on Maya’s alarm clock shifted to 9:00 PM, I was practically vibrating with impatience. I sat cross legged on the edge of the mattress, my eyes glued to the window.A faint rustle from the bushes below caught my attention. A figure in my favorite oversized cashmere coat emerged into the dim moonlight, looking completely out of place. It was Maya.A smile touched my lips. I didn’t dare head downstairs toward the front door. Back at my real house, whenever I got into a fight with my parents, I would lock myself away and stay completely out of sight. It was a flawless strategy, the silence always made them feel guilty, and within a few hours, they’d be knocking on my door to apologize and give me whatever I wanted. I figured the same rule applied here. If I stayed hidden in this bedroom, Maya's parents would eventually think they had pushed me too hard and come up to make peace.I slid the window pane upward, and leaned over the sill. "Up here,
Chloe's POV After closing hours, I practically bolted out of the school gates, keeping my distance from both Maya and Tristan, completely consumed by the thought of Friday night. “Kane’s house,” I muttered. The biggest party of the year. I was going to walk in there on Jaxon’s arm, and no one was going to stop me.When I finally reached home, I pushed the front door open, expecting the usual quiet atmosphere. Instead, Maya's mom was standing by the counter, sorting through a stack of ironed dress shirts, while her dad was on the phone, speaking rapidly in Japanese with a massive smile on his face. The smell of traditional celebratory sukiyaki was already in the air."Ah, Maya! You're home," her mom said, turning around with a bright, beaming smile. She wiped her hands on her apron and rushed over to me. "Wonderful news. Your father just found out today, his company is giving him the regional promotion he has been working toward for five years!""Oh. Wow. Great," I muttered, trying
Chloe’s POVI was humming to myself as I walked down the narrow hallway toward the library, lightly tapping my fingers against the customized journal Jaxon had given me. I felt like I was floating on a cloud that no one at Northview High could touch.Suddenly, a hand shot out from the shadows of the old janitor's closet, gripping my forearm tightly and pulling me into the alcove beneath the stairwell.I gasped, ready to scream, but the words died in my throat when I saw who it was.It was Maya. Her face was an expression of pure rage. Before I could even open my mouth to snap at her for touching me, she shoved a piece of paper directly into my chest."Chloe, what the hell are you doing to my results?" Maya hissed, her voice was sharp. I blinked, smoothing out the paper. It was a graded AP Calculus quiz. At the top, written in glaring, aggressive red ink, was a massive, circled D-."Oh," I muttered, tossing my head back carelessly. "That. Look, your teacher gives way too many trick ques
Chloe's POV The front door clicked shut behind me. I practically floated up the creaking wooden stairs, my hands still warm from where Jaxon had squeezed them goodbye. I slipped into the bedroom and threw myself backward onto the mattress, staring up at the ceiling tiles with a massive, unstoppable smile spreading across my face. The date had been flawless. Jaxon had been perfect. He didn't care about the rumors. He was falling for me, even while I was trapped in this ugly body.A sharp, familiar chime shattered the silence. I rolled over, grabbing Maya’s phone off the cluttered nightstand, expecting a sweet post date text from Jax. Instead, Tristan’s name popped up on the screen. My fingers tensed, ready to read another furious, judgmental paragraph.Tristan: Hey Maya. Look, I’ve been sitting on my porch thinking about what happened, and I just wanted to say I’m really sorry for how I behaved tonight. You were right. You have every right to be friends with whoever you wish. We’re jus
Chloe's POV We pulled into the gravel parking lot of the retro diner across town, my heart was beating so fast I could feel it pulsing in my ears."Here we are," Jax said, killing the engine and turning to look at me. "Far enough from Northview that we don't have to deal with anyone's drama.""It's perfect," I said, offering him a wide smile. I had spent nearly two hours in the bathroom trying to tame her frizzy hair into a neat half up style, and while her dark green turtleneck wasn't exactly high fashion, the way Jax looked at me made all the frustration melt away.Inside, the diner felt entirely lived in and cozy. The sweet scent of maple syrup, fried chicken, and warm vinyl booths filled the air. A classic jukebox played a soft melody in the corner. Jax guided me toward a booth tucked far into the back corner, pulling out the table slightly so I could slide in.The next two hours that followed, was the most fun I’d had since the soul swap happened. When the waitress brought out a
Chloe’s POVMaya stormed out of the room after yelling nonstop. I was only sad cause she had to take my dog with her."It's fine," I whispered to myself, my voice trembling with a mix of leftover adrenaline and pure stubbornness. "She's just bitter. She doesn't get it."I leaned back against the pillows, staring blankly at the ceiling tiles. Who cared if she was mad? She was living in my beautiful house, sleeping in my huge bed, and driving my car. The least she could do was let me find a silver lining in this nightmare. If we were stuck like this forever, I wasn't going to spend it miserable and invisible like she did.Suddenly, the smartphone resting on the cluttered desk buzzed, the vibration cutting through the quiet room.I scrambled across the mattress, snatching the device up. My breath caught when I saw the lock screen. It was a text from Jaxon.Jaxon: Hey Maya, Just wanted to talk to you for a bit, could I stop by at your place, if that's cool with you ofc.He wanted to come
