Maya’s POV

We went to a small bistro on the edge of town. I ate expensive pasta while people stared at us. I loved it. I loved the way the waitress smiled at me instead of looking through me. I loved being the girl everyone wanted to be. For a moment, a cold fear settled in my stomach. What if the clock strikes midnight and I turn back? What if this is the only time I ever feel like I'm enough?

The mood shifted the moment we pulled back into his driveway. Jaxon didn't get out. He reached over, grabbing the back of my neck and pulling me toward him. It wasn't a sweet kiss. And I panicked with the realization that I didn't know the rules of this game.

He moved to my neck, and I felt a sharp sting. "Jaxon, stop," I whispered, touching the spot where he’d left a love bite. Great, how am I supposed to explain a hickey on Chloe's neck?

But he didn't stop. “Oh my… good—

, frustratingly good. But then his hand started to move.

"No," I said, firmly pushing his hand away. "We... we can't do this in the car."

Jaxon pulled back. "No way you’re saying that, Chloe. We’ve made out in this car a dozen times. The glass is tinted, remember? No one can see us."

"We're right outside your house, Jaxon," I countered.

"Who cares? My parents aren't even home. We can just go inside and finish this." He reached for me again, but I was already opening the car door.

"I have to go," I said, as I hurried to Chloe’s car.

When I got back to my old house to swap stories with Chloe, the explosion was immediate.

I met her in the driveway, and the second she heard what I did, she lost it.

"I kept your perfect little Tristan safe, Maya! I talked to him for twenty minutes about books I’ve never read! Why couldn't you just do the same for me?"

"It’s not the same!" I yelled back. "You don't get to be forced to make out in a car! I didn't know what to do!"

"So? I’ve made out on a teacher's desk before! What’s so hard about a Jeep?"

"I’ve never done it before, Chloe! I'm not you! It's different for me!"

"Well, then go fix it!" Chloe said.

She was so angry she didn't even see Tristan coming down his porch steps. He looked toward us, a confused smile on his face. "Hey, Maya? You okay? You guys seem..."

"Fuck off, Tristan!" Chloe barked, not even looking at him as she stormed toward the front door.

Tristan froze, the smile vanishing from his face. He looked at "Maya’s" as she left, then at me, standing there as Chloe. I wanted to scream and tell him it wasn't me, that I loved him, that I would never speak to him like that.

But I couldn't. I had to play the part.

I looked at Tristan, my heart breaking for the boy who finally thought his neighbor was "edgy" only to have her turn into a monster.

"Fix it," Chloe’s voice rang in my head.

I had to apologize to Jaxon for being "frigid," and Chloe had to find a way to make Tristan forget she’d just crushed his spirit.

I stood there for a long moment after Tristan went back to his house. The weight of Chloe's "perfect" life was starting to feel wrong. I looked down at my phone. I had to fix this. If Jaxon stayed mad, Chloe would make my life a living hell when we switched back.

If we switched back.

I took a deep breath and typed out a text to Jaxon.

Hey... sorry about earlier. I've just had a really long day and I’m a bit stressed. Can we talk? I'll make it up to you tomorrow.

I hit send and felt a piece of my soul wither. I was apologizing for having boundaries. Is this what Chloe’s life was really like? Being a prize that had to stay polished and agreeable at all times?

I walked into my old house. I saw my mom and dad. They both looked surprised, the last time they saw Chloe in this house was in 9th grade.

I went upstairs and found Chloe sitting on the bed, her head in her hands.

"Did you do it?" she asked without looking up.

"I texted him," I said. "Now you. You need to fix it with Tristan. He’s the only person who actually likes me for me. You can't let him think I'm like... well, like you were just now."

Chloe looked up, "fine," she muttered. "I'll talk to him tomorrow morning. But Maya? If Jaxon doesn't forgive 'me' by the time the sun comes up, I’m telling everyone what's going on.

I stared at her. She was desperate. We both were. As the clock on the nightstand ticked toward 8:00 PM. We only had four hours left until midnight.

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 18

Chloe's POV After closing hours, I practically bolted out of the school gates, keeping my distance from both Maya and Tristan, completely consumed by the thought of Friday night. “Kane’s house,” I muttered. The biggest party of the year. I was going to walk in there on Jaxon’s arm, and no one was going to stop me.When I finally reached home, I pushed the front door open, expecting the usual quiet atmosphere. Instead, Maya's mom was standing by the counter, sorting through a stack of ironed dress shirts, while her dad was on the phone, speaking rapidly in Japanese with a massive smile on his face. The smell of traditional celebratory sukiyaki was already in the air."Ah, Maya! You're home," her mom said, turning around with a bright, beaming smile. She wiped her hands on her apron and rushed over to me. "Wonderful news. Your father just found out today, his company is giving him the regional promotion he has been working toward for five years!""Oh. Wow. Great," I muttered, trying

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 17

Chloe’s POVI was humming to myself as I walked down the narrow hallway toward the library, lightly tapping my fingers against the customized journal Jaxon had given me. I felt like I was floating on a cloud that no one at Northview High could touch.Suddenly, a hand shot out from the shadows of the old janitor's closet, gripping my forearm tightly and pulling me into the alcove beneath the stairwell.I gasped, ready to scream, but the words died in my throat when I saw who it was.It was Maya. Her face was an expression of pure rage. Before I could even open my mouth to snap at her for touching me, she shoved a piece of paper directly into my chest."Chloe, what the hell are you doing to my results?" Maya hissed, her voice was sharp. I blinked, smoothing out the paper. It was a graded AP Calculus quiz. At the top, written in glaring, aggressive red ink, was a massive, circled D-."Oh," I muttered, tossing my head back carelessly. "That. Look, your teacher gives way too many trick ques

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 16

Chloe's POV The front door clicked shut behind me. I practically floated up the creaking wooden stairs, my hands still warm from where Jaxon had squeezed them goodbye. I slipped into the bedroom and threw myself backward onto the mattress, staring up at the ceiling tiles with a massive, unstoppable smile spreading across my face. The date had been flawless. Jaxon had been perfect. He didn't care about the rumors. He was falling for me, even while I was trapped in this ugly body.A sharp, familiar chime shattered the silence. I rolled over, grabbing Maya’s phone off the cluttered nightstand, expecting a sweet post date text from Jax. Instead, Tristan’s name popped up on the screen. My fingers tensed, ready to read another furious, judgmental paragraph.Tristan: Hey Maya. Look, I’ve been sitting on my porch thinking about what happened, and I just wanted to say I’m really sorry for how I behaved tonight. You were right. You have every right to be friends with whoever you wish. We’re jus

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 15

Chloe's POV We pulled into the gravel parking lot of the retro diner across town, my heart was beating so fast I could feel it pulsing in my ears."Here we are," Jax said, killing the engine and turning to look at me. "Far enough from Northview that we don't have to deal with anyone's drama.""It's perfect," I said, offering him a wide smile. I had spent nearly two hours in the bathroom trying to tame her frizzy hair into a neat half up style, and while her dark green turtleneck wasn't exactly high fashion, the way Jax looked at me made all the frustration melt away.Inside, the diner felt entirely lived in and cozy. The sweet scent of maple syrup, fried chicken, and warm vinyl booths filled the air. A classic jukebox played a soft melody in the corner. Jax guided me toward a booth tucked far into the back corner, pulling out the table slightly so I could slide in.The next two hours that followed, was the most fun I’d had since the soul swap happened. When the waitress brought out a

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 14

Chloe’s POVMaya stormed out of the room after yelling nonstop. I was only sad cause she had to take my dog with her."It's fine," I whispered to myself, my voice trembling with a mix of leftover adrenaline and pure stubbornness. "She's just bitter. She doesn't get it."I leaned back against the pillows, staring blankly at the ceiling tiles. Who cared if she was mad? She was living in my beautiful house, sleeping in my huge bed, and driving my car. The least she could do was let me find a silver lining in this nightmare. If we were stuck like this forever, I wasn't going to spend it miserable and invisible like she did.Suddenly, the smartphone resting on the cluttered desk buzzed, the vibration cutting through the quiet room.I scrambled across the mattress, snatching the device up. My breath caught when I saw the lock screen. It was a text from Jaxon.Jaxon: Hey Maya, Just wanted to talk to you for a bit, could I stop by at your place, if that's cool with you ofc.He wanted to come

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 13

Chloe’s POVI sat at a corner table in the cafeteria, right next to the dented metal emergency exit door. The lunch today was a total disaster, some kind of meat slathered in brown gravy, a pile of lukewarm tater tots, and a carton of milk that was already sweating. I dug my hands deep into the pockets of my oversized, scratchy wool cardigan, slouching my shoulders until my spine rounded. I was mimicking her exact "don't look at me" posture. Then, the sharp, screeching sound of metal chair legs scraping against the linoleum floor shattered my focus.I flinched, instinctively bracing myself for Tristan to slide into the seat with a heavy sigh and a million questions about why I was acting so weird lately. But when I looked up, the breath caught in my throat. It wasn't Tristan. It was Jaxon. He dropped his heavy plastic tray onto the table, making my milk carton rattle. He didn't look around to see if his teammates were watching. He just looked straight at me, a soft, almost shy smile t
