Maya’s POV

Monday morning was rough.

Chloe was actually back at school. She moved down the hallway like she owned the place, wearing my old cardigan like it was nothing. And Jaxon was hanging around by the lockers with his usual group, acting completely unfazed about everything that happened on those stairs.

Then there was Mark.

We were in third period together, and I spent the whole hour staring at the back of his head. He didn't turn around once. No notes tossed on my desk, no quiet looks.

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 51

Maya’s POV"Mark, I—"Before I could get a single word out, bright headlights swept across the porch, cutting through the driveway and blinding us both.Mark flinched, his hands instantly dropping from my shoulders as he stepped back toward the front door. I covered my eyes, shielding my face. A second later, two car doors slammed shut.Tristan stepped into the light first, pulling his hands into his hoodie pocket as he walked up the porch steps. Behind him was Chloe."What are you guys doing here?" I blurted out.Tristan paused on the top step, looking between me and Mark. "We went to your house first. But Chloe's mom said you weren't home, so we figured you'd probably be over here."Mark wiped a hand over his face, his expression instantly smoothing out. He stepped to the side, pushing the front door open wider."Come inside," Mark said quietly. We all filed into his living room. The room felt tiny all of a sudden. Tristan sat down on the arm of the couch, leaning his elbows on his

He didn't turn around once. No notes tossed on my desk, no quiet looks. The second the bell rang, I grabbed my bag and hurried after him before he could disappear into the crowd."Mark! Wait up," I called out, cutting past a few people in the hallway. He stopped near a row of lockers and turned around slowly. His expression was blank which felt way worse than if he’d ignored me."Hey," he said, keeping his voice quiet.I stopped in front of him, shoving my hands into my pockets so he wouldn't see them shaking. "Mark... about last night. In your truck. I didn't mean to

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 49

Maya’s POVI couldn't focus on a single word the English teacher was saying, and judging by the slump of Mark’s shoulders two desks down, he wasn't paying attention either. When the final bell rang, Mark hung back until the rest of the class was out."Hey," he said, swinging his backpack over one shoulder as he walked up to my desk. "We need to go over to your place."I looked up, rubbing my eyes. "My place? You mean... my old house?""Yeah," Mark said, his voice dropping to a low whisper as a few stray kids passed by the doorway. "We need to talk to Chloe again. We can't just leave things hanging after yesterday. She needs to know we’re actually going to look for that device, or at least figure out our next move together. We can head over after school, maybe around four?"I let out a long breath, chewing on my bottom lip. "Fine. Four o'clock."By 4:38PM, Mark’s truck pulled up to the curb. We walked up the porch, Mark taking the lead, and pushed open the front door.Laughter echoed f

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 48

Maya’s POVWe got to Mark’s place in complete silence. I barely remembered stepping out of the truck or walking into his house, my head was spinning."We've gotten to my place, and you've still not told me what happened in there," Mark said softly, closing the front door behind us."For God's sake, Mark, let me think!" I snapped, pulling my hair back with trembling hands as I paced the living room floor.Mark didn't get mad. He just kept mute, giving me space as he quietly walked over to the sofa in the living room and sat down. He waited patiently, his eyes following me until my pacing finally ran out of steam. I sank down onto the cushions beside him, staring blankly at the floorboards.Slowly, Mark reached out and held my hand."Does she still have it?" he asked gently.I shook my head violently, the sudden movement causing tears to spill over my eyelashes and drip hot down my cheeks. "No... No, Mark."Mark’s brow furrowed. "What happened to it?""Chloe said she thought it was tras

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 47

Maya’s POVI grabbed Chloe by the arm and pulled her up the narrow staircase of my family's house, ignoring the confused look Tristan shot us from the living room. The second we crossed the threshold into my old bedroom, I pushed the door shut and clicked the lock into place.Chloe shook her arm free, smoothing down the front of my old cardigan, her eyebrows drawn together in instant annoyance. "What is your problem? You can't just drag me around like that in front of him.""We have a massive problem, Chloe," I whispered sharply, keeping my voice low so it wouldn't carry through the floorboards. "The device. The small, metallic one from the bathroom the day we swapped. I know what happened."Chloe blinked, looking at me like I had lost my mind. "What are you talking about?""It was a wish device!" I confessed, the words tumbling out of me. "A girl named Jess gave it to me in the school bathroom right before you walked in. I dropped it into the sink, and I made a wish to have your life

  • Becoming Chloe   Chapter 46

Maya’s POVMark fell silent.“Mark?” I said tapping him gently. “Do you think we're—”“I don't wanna raise your hopes high, Maya. We don't even know how the swap happened or if any of this is normal.” Mark said quietly, his voice carefully neutral, though I could hear the guarded edge in it.My fingers tightened in the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer as a sudden guilt washed over me."It all my fault, Mark.” I whispered.“Don't say that Maya. It's not your fault.” Mark contorted.“It is. I was the one who made that stupid wish, Mark," I whispered, the confession. "I made that stupid wish to have Chloe's life."Mark shifted beside me. He pulled back slightly, adjusting his position on the bed so he could look directly into my eyes. "What wish?""On the first day of the first semester," I choked out, the memories rushing back. "I got bullied in class because the teacher was absent. Everyone was picking on me, laughing at me... I couldn't take it. I ran off to the bathroom, cryin
