INTELLIGENCE AND DIAMONDS

The morning before the Metropolitan Hospital Charity Gala, Sloane sat at her kitchen counter with a fresh cup of coffee, opening the LUS System app.

Now that she had officially crossed into Tier 2, a sleek new icon sat at the top corner of her dashboard: TARGET DOSSIERS.

Sloane tapped it. The screen transformed into a high-tech intelligence layout. She typed Brett Thorne into the search bar, holding her breath as the loading ring spun once, twice, and then expanded into a comprehensive profile.

[ TARGET DOSSIER: BRETT THORNE ]

Rank: Tier 4 (Ultra-High Net Worth / Corporate Titan)

Status: Single (Recently Unattached)

Known Behavioral Traits: Dominant, highly analytical, easily bored by overt flattery, values poise, sharp intellect, and women who project effortless status.

[ TACTICAL INSIGHT ]

Target reacts strongly to dynamic tension. Does not respond to traditional desperation or obvious social climbing.

Sloane leaned back against her barstool, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across her lips.

"Easily bored by flattery," she whispered, memorizing every line of the profile. "Good to know."

Her phone buzzed in her hand, replacing the dossier with a incoming text from Theodore.

Theodore: Are you free for early evening drinks at Bellevue? I want to give you something for tomorrow night.

Sloane smoothed down her satin robe and typed back immediately.

Sloane: I can do six o'clock. See you there, Theodore.

At six-fifteen, Sloane sat across from Theodore in the dimly lit, leather-accented lounge of Bellevue, a private club in the financial district.

Theodore looked as handsome and impeccably groomed as ever, though he was practically buzzing with nervous energy about the upcoming Gala.

"Tomorrow night is huge for me, Sloane," Theodore said, taking a sip of his bourbon. "Some of the biggest players in the region are going to be at our table."

"I am sure you will handle them with your usual charm," Sloane said smoothly, leaning her chin in her hand, giving him just enough warm attention to keep him preening.

"Oh, absolutely," Theodore grinned, puffing out his chest. "Speaking of our table... you will never guess who is sitting two seats down from us."

Sloane raised a delicate brow, feigning innocent curiosity. "Oh? Who?"

Theodore leaned across the small table, dropping his voice to a low, dramatic whisper. "Brett Thorne. And get this, he's coming solo."

Sloane kept her expression completely neutral, taking a slow sip of her cocktail. "Solo? I thought a man in his position always had a socialite on his arm."

"Normally, yeah," Theodore smirked, shaking his head with a quiet chuckle. "He was dating that blonde influencer model, Victoria, for the last six months. But word around the firm is he kicked her out of his penthouse three days ago. Completely cut her off. Didn’t even let her keep the car he leased for her. Poor girl is basically broke and stranded now. People in our circle almost feel sorry for her."

Fascinating, Sloane thought, her mind rapidly piecing together the gossip with her System Dossier.

Brett hadn't just ended a relationship; he had ruthlessly pruned a woman who had likely gotten needy, demanding, or boring. He liked high-value women who held their own ground, and he had zero patience for dead weight.

"How tragic," Sloane murmured, her tone dripping with a subtle, icy amuse-bouche of disdain. "A woman should never rely entirely on a man's charity."

Theodore’s eyes lit up with absolute delight at her response. He clearly loved that Sloane did not express fake sympathy or sound like a needy social climber.

"My thoughts exactly!" Theodore exclaimed, reaching into his suit jacket. "You have class, Sloane. Real class. Which is why I picked this up for you today. You cannot go to a black-tie gala without a little extra sparkle."

He set a velvet-lined jewelry box on the mahogany table and slid it toward her.

Sloane opened the latch. Resting against the black velvet was a breathtaking pair of teardrop diamond earrings that caught the lounge's low light, sparkling with brilliant, icy fire.

"Theodore..." Sloane breathed out, her eyes wide as she looked up at him. "These are gorgeous."

"They are real diamonds," Theodore boasted proudly, leaning back with a satisfied smirk. "Two carats each. They are going to look insane with that burgundy dress you bought."

BZZZZT!

Inside her clutch, her phone gave a deep, heavy vibration. Sloane casually pulled it out under the table, glancing down at the screen.

[  PASSIVE ASSET DETECTED ]

Item: Fine Jewelry - Diamond Teardrop Earrings ($1,800.00)

System Cut (50%): +$900.00

[ UPDATED BALANCE: $2,589.04 ]

[ TIER 2 PROGRESS: 12% ]

A rush of adrenaline hit her blood. Nine hundred dollars added straight to her balance! Her total was right back up to $2,589.04, completely erasing the cost of her burgundy gown and pushing her Tier 2 progress up to twelve percent before the Gala even started.

Sloane closed her clutch, looking up at Theodore with a soft, captivating smile. She leaned in, placing a gentle hand over his on the table.

"You really know how to take care of a woman, Theodore," she said softly, her eyes sparkling. "I will make sure everyone at that table knows exactly who brought me."

Theodore beamed, thoroughly wrapped around her finger, completely oblivious to the fact that he was handing her every piece of armor she needed to conquer Brett Thorne.

Later that night, Sloane stood in her bathroom, holding one of the brilliant diamond teardrops up to her ear in the mirror.

She knew the stakes now. She knew Brett Thorne was ruthless, newly single, and sitting at her exact table tomorrow night. She knew he had destroyed her father's legacy without a second thought, and she knew he had zero tolerance for weak women.

She took a deep breath, setting the earring back in its velvet box.

"Tomorrow night, Brett," Sloane whispered to her reflection, her green eyes sharp and unwavering. "We finally meet."

Sloane woke up late the following morning, stretching lazily across her king-sized mattress as sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains. Her mind immediately drifted back to the night before, to the low, raspy drawl of Cowboy Dale, the dark intensity in his amber eyes, and the sheer electric rush of taking control.God, I wonder what he’s like in real life, Sloane thought, staring up at the ceiling with a lazy, wicked smirk. Bet he’s even better in person. Then, she caught herself, letting out a sharp chuckle and shaking her head."Stop it, Sloane," she muttered aloud, sitting up and pulling her hair into a messy bun. "He’s a cam model. His name is probably Gary, his accent is entirely manufactured for southern charm tokens, and he probably lives in a basement in Ohio."Still, the fantasy had served its purpose. Unlike her previous targets, whom Sloane had happily ditched the moment her System balance updated, Theodore Whitmore was a long-term investment. For three days following their dinner at L’Etoile, Sloane kept the conversation flowing over text. It took effort. Theodore was an exhausting communicator. He was constantly sending photos of his luxury steering wheel, complaining about market volatility, or casually mentioning how much his gym membership cost.Yet, as much as his arrogance made her roll her eyes, Sloane had to admit something irritating: if you muted his mouth, the man was undeniably attractive. He had broad shoulders, sharp blue eyes, and a neat, clean-cut jawline that made standing next to him genuinely pleasant. On Thursday afternoon, a courier knocked on her apartment door, delivering a massive, cascading arrangement of rare white orchids in a heavy crystal vase.Sloane set the heavy vase on her counter, pulling out the small card.Thinking of you. - T.Her phone buzzed

The morning light was just beginning to hit Sloane's apartment floor when her phone chimed with an unusual, low-pitched pulse.
