Chapter 1

I picked up my broken camera lens and hard drive from the wreckage.

After a moment, I stuffed them into my backpack and started walking out.

Archie stood when he saw me and gripped my arm.

Pain shot through me, and I pulled away.

"Chloe Jepson, can't you see how busy everyone is? Why are you throwing a tantrum now?" asked Archie in a stern voice.

Then he noticed that my arm was red and swollen. A look of concern crossed his face.

"What happened to your arm? Alright. Stop being mad. I shouldn't have left you there by yourself. But this competition is very important. Sharon is very talented, and her parents have high hopes for her. We couldn't let anything happen to her work."

His words stung. I turned away, unable to face him.

Archie and I were both orphans. We grew up together in the countryside and fought our way into Kenford Film Academy together.

After graduation, he became a screenwriter, and I became a director.

The first film we made together, "The Grassland Dream", won countless newcomer awards and made us the hottest rising talents in the industry.

From then on, Archie was always out giving interviews, speaking at panels, and putting his artistic vision out on social media.

Before long, he became a well-known screenwriter, while I remained an unknown director standing in his shadow.

His fans would even mock me from time to time, saying I was just riding his coattails and was lucky because of his s.

I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and let out a bitter laugh.

"So you're saying that it was fine to leave me behind in the hard-hit area, and it didn't matter if my equipment was destroyed?"

Just then, Sharon Thatcher, the assistant director, walked over and said apologetically, "Sorry, Chloe. I borrowed your equipment from Archie.

"The sandstorm came upon us too fast. He said none of that old stuff really mattered, so we focused on saving what was most important. I already told my dad. He'll buy you new ones from abroad for you."

Sharon was exactly as Archie had described—someone who carried the effortless confidence of someone born into privilege, with every single word carefully chosen and perfectly polished.

I glanced down at the floor.

The "important equipment" they had managed to save included light reflectors, headsets, and a prop whip that couldn't have cost more than a few bucks.

So, in Archie's eyes, the broken lens and hard drive in my bag didn't matter.

A wave of hurt washed over me, and I couldn't hold it back. "I'm the main director of this film. My equipment and my files are important, too."

Archie laughed when he heard that.

"Chloe, this competition is a whole different ballgame from those amateur shoots you usually do. Sharon comes from a family of artists. She grew up with resources and exposure you never had. That's why she can truly understand my writing and bring our vision to life."

After that, the two of them started talking about the biggest awards in the industry, classic movies, and the art of visual storytelling.

I had no patience left for their highbrow art discussion.

I looked Archie straight in the eye and asked him slowly and clearly, "What if the hard drive you gave me is destroyed? What if our ten years of memories are all gone?"

The night we were both accepted into Kenford Film Academy, he confessed his feelings to me at a diner on the outskirts of the city. He had even scraped together enough money to buy me a hard drive.

We dreamed of becoming a legendary filmmaking duo and vowed to make a name for ourselves in the industry.

For ten years, that hard drive held our most precious memories from our lives, our studies, and our work together.

Without a second thought, he waved it off. He said, "Alright, alright. My bad. I'll buy you a new one tomorrow. Chloe, you're clinging to this worthless old stuff and picking a fight with me over them. Don't you think you're being unreasonable?

"If you can't control your emotions, then maybe you shouldn't be part of this project. Come back when you realize you were wrong."

I stood there, stunned, for a few seconds before something inside me finally gave way.

The films, our memories, even who was right or wrong—it all seemed meaningless.

The film competition posters lay scattered across the studio floor, the bold deadline on them showing there were only ten days left.

I picked up my backpack, walked out of the studio, and said, "Fine. Let's break up. I'll make my own film."

  • Dumped in a Sandstorm for His Muse   Chapter 7

With Beth's encouragement and advice, I gave myself a two-month break.I went back to the orphanage and gave a large portion of the money I had earned to Mr. Maddox. He recalled that when they had first found me, I was so skinny that a hawk in the sky could have carried me off.It was the ranchers who took care of me, with different families taking turns feeding me.Life in the grasslands was never easy. A single blizzard or sandstorm could devastate the ranchers' livelihoods. When I was a teenager, I couldn't stand by and watch their horse get stolen, so I stepped in to stop the thief. Now, I hoped I could use what I earned to make their lives a little easier.Later, Mr. Maddox brought me a young horse under four years old. Her mane danced in the wind, looking just like Jewel when she was young.I named her Aurora. She didn't have to be anyone's treasure. She was the light of the grasslands.Every day, I fed her, brushed her mane, and told her stories about Jewel.I imagine

Before calling me up, the host played the short intro video I had asked Beth to select. It was filmed right after I finished my latest work.I had borrowed a horse from a rancher on a whim and tore across the grasslands. In the footage, Jewel stood quietly in the distance.Dressed in a simple T-shirt, I spread my arms on horseback, letting the grass-scented breeze sweep across my face. From a distance, I thought I saw Archie's eyes turn red. He had almost forgotten this side of me.I was no longer the unknown director riding on his coattails, nor was I the country girl who supposedly knew nothing about art. After my film was announced as the winner, the name called out was mine—Chloe Jepson.Once the video ended, a staff member gestured for me to take the stage. It was my first time standing in the spotlight like this, and I felt a little awkward as I nervously smoothed down my gown. When I looked at the crowd, I was met with looks of admiration from the media, my fellow film

When I returned to Kenford, I heard that Archie had managed to submit his competition entry right before the deadline.I rushed back to our place to pack up my belongings.Archie and I had been together for ten years.Yet, my luggage held nothing more than a few pieces of clothing and an old hard drive. The irony was that the hard drive had been destroyed in the sandstorm—along with all our memories.I took down every photo of us in the living room and packed them into boxes, along with the dozen notebooks I had filled while working on his s. Then I called a junk collector to haul it all away.Without looking back, I closed the door behind me and left.I changed my phone number and moved to Thassuri, where I started a film studio of my own.Back on the grasslands, I had promised myself that my name would appear in the most prominent place in every film I made. After I left Kenford, Archie kept texting me."Why did you move everything out of the house?"Where are you? Why can

When I woke up the next morning, I shut myself in my room and started packing. The room was filled with memories from mine and Archie's childhood. On the desk was a crooked drawing of me riding Jewel, with Archie holding her reins.Hanging on the wall were the kites we made as kids, with our names written on them.I calmly folded a few pieces of clothing and packed them away.Suddenly, loud noises echoed from outside, and Mr. Maddox rushed into the room.He said breathlessly, "Archie said he was making a movie, and the crew took Jewel away! She's old, and her legs are already in bad shape. She can't run anymore."My heart tightened, and I ran out after them.In the distance, Archie and Sharon had set up their equipment.Jewel looked visibly uneasy at the center of the frame.I walked over to Archie and confronted him. "You grew up riding Jewel, so you know that she's injured. There's no way she can carry someone through a long shoot."He waved me off and said, "You don't und

The next morning, I received an email from the competition committee. My film had received a very high score in the preliminary review, so they made an exception and advanced me straight to the final round. That was the kind of special treatment usually reserved for high-profile studios like Archie's. When I happily walked Jewel back to the orphanage after a stroll, the sun was already starting to set. That was when I ran into Archie and Sharon at the entrance. When he saw me, he looked surprised."Sharon and I had a discussion last night. We decided to come back here to shoot some additional footage. We can even feature Jewel."The orphanage has open fields, cattle, and horses. That's the kind of scenery we imagined for the film."Then he looked at me and asked, "Why did you follow us here, though? Look, you can stay and help the crew clean up if you want, but you need to stop throwing tantrums."I secured Jewel and calmly said, "No, thanks. I've already entered the competit

  • Dumped in a Sandstorm for His Muse   Chapter 2

I returned to the countryside, back to the orphanage that had raised us.Armed with nothing but my phone and a scuffed-up camera lens, I set out to make my own film.Working almost non-stop around the clock, I somehow finished it three days ahead of the deadline. The moment I clicked the "submit" button, I breathed a long sigh of relief. I stretched and looked out the window. Endless grasslands spread out before me.Back when we made "The Grassland Dream", Archie and I had pulled all-nighters like this together more times than I could count. He had a real talent for storytelling, but his s never scored well in college.During his internships, his work was never considered outstanding.I knew it wasn't because his stories were bad. He just needed someone who could understand him.I was the one who could see the stories hidden beneath his obscure writing, translate his vision to the screen, and bring the emotions in his words to life. That was my gift.It was the reason why o
