Chapter 2

작가: hotkiwi
I returned to the countryside, back to the orphanage that had raised us.

Armed with nothing but my phone and a scuffed-up camera lens, I set out to make my own film.

Working almost non-stop around the clock, I somehow finished it three days ahead of the deadline.

The moment I clicked the "submit" button, I breathed a long sigh of relief.

I stretched and looked out the window. Endless grasslands spread out before me.

Back when we made "The Grassland Dream", Archie and I had pulled all-nighters like this together more times than I could count.

He had a real talent for storytelling, but his s never scored well in college.

During his internships, his work was never considered outstanding.

I knew it wasn't because his stories were bad. He just needed someone who could understand him.

I was the one who could see the stories hidden beneath his obscure writing, translate his vision to the screen, and bring the emotions in his words to life.

That was my gift.

It was the reason why our first collaboration was such a success and why I became his exclusive director.

.

Sharon graduated from a prestigious school overseas, and both her parents were well-connected in the art industry.

I had seen her work. It was polished, modern, and refined.

But Archie's stories were rooted in the raw beauty of the countryside.

I couldn't imagine how the two styles could ever come together without clashing.

Still, it was no longer my concern.

Archie hadn't called me once in over a week.

I shook my head and booked a flight to leave the grasslands in three days.

Just then, David Maddox, the orphanage director, brought Jewel over to me. It was a horse Archie and I had raised as kids.

The horse was old now, no longer able to carry Archie and me as we raced across the grasslands the way she used to.

Mr. Maddox was happy to see me after so long.

"Chloe, remember back when you and Archie were just teenagers?" he asked.

"You were crazy enough to go after a horse thief all by yourself. Archie was so worried that he was almost in tears. He gathered all the local ranchers to search for you because he couldn't bear the thought of you facing the bad guy alone. He even begged the rancher to give you Jewel to make you feel better."

Looking back, I had no idea what gave me the courage.

I held the stolen foal tightly in my arms and screamed at the thief.

Archie stood in front of me with a wooden stick, refusing to take a single step back.

Back then, I was the person he cared about most.

He didn't dismiss the foal as something insignificant or blame me for causing trouble.

He just brushed back my messy hair and tried to comfort me.

"Since you like this horse so much, she's yours. Give her a name."

"How about Jewel?" I asked.

Archie looked into my eyes with tenderness and agreed, "Sure. She's the jewel of the grassland."

Just then, Archie's call came in, pulling me out of my thoughts.

It began with the same apology I had heard countless times before.

"I'm sorry, Chloe. Sharon still has a few more scenes to shoot over the next couple of days. She doesn't know the area well, so I need to stay with her."

Before I could reply, Sharon snatched the phone from Archie, her voice bubbling over with excitement.

"Chloe, it's such a shame you're not here," she chattered. "A few local thugs tried to hassle us. I don't understand their accents. Thank goodness Archie stepped in to protect me. If not, it could've been a total disaster!

"Honestly, he must be working out." She giggled. "When he swept me into his arms, it was so effortlessly smooth."

I nodded, though she couldn't see it.

Archie still protected what he cared about most.

It was just that now, his work and Sharon were all that mattered to him, and I was just an afterthought.

I cleared my throat, cutting off Sharon's excited rambling.

Archie took the phone back and said flatly, "Sharon is a filmmaker, so she naturally makes everything sound more dramatic. I was just helping her out. Don't overthink it."

A sudden thought crossed my mind, and I couldn't help asking, "Archie, do you still remember what day tomorrow is?"

I glanced at the reminder on my phone.

The day "The Grassland Dream" won its award, Archie had held me tightly, overwhelmed with joy.

In front of the reporters, he made a promise, a mysterious smile playing on his lips.

"Five years from now, I'll bring the most precious person in my life back to the countryside. I'll swear to the sky and earth that I'll give her a home..."

Tomorrow would be that promised day.

But on the phone, he was silent for a long time before finally asking impatiently, "What are you trying to say? Sharon and I are up to our necks in work. Can you stop making trouble and wait until I get back?"

I laughed awkwardly and replied, "Alright, bye."

Then I hung up.

With Beth's encouragement and advice, I gave myself a two-month break.I went back to the orphanage and gave a large portion of the money I had earned to Mr. Maddox. He recalled that when they had first found me, I was so skinny that a hawk in the sky could have carried me off.It was the ranchers who took care of me, with different families taking turns feeding me.Life in the grasslands was never easy. A single blizzard or sandstorm could devastate the ranchers' livelihoods. When I was a teenager, I couldn't stand by and watch their horse get stolen, so I stepped in to stop the thief. Now, I hoped I could use what I earned to make their lives a little easier.Later, Mr. Maddox brought me a young horse under four years old. Her mane danced in the wind, looking just like Jewel when she was young.I named her Aurora. She didn't have to be anyone's treasure. She was the light of the grasslands.Every day, I fed her, brushed her mane, and told her stories about Jewel.I imagine

Before calling me up, the host played the short intro video I had asked Beth to select. It was filmed right after I finished my latest work.I had borrowed a horse from a rancher on a whim and tore across the grasslands. In the footage, Jewel stood quietly in the distance.Dressed in a simple T-shirt, I spread my arms on horseback, letting the grass-scented breeze sweep across my face. From a distance, I thought I saw Archie's eyes turn red. He had almost forgotten this side of me.I was no longer the unknown director riding on his coattails, nor was I the country girl who supposedly knew nothing about art. After my film was announced as the winner, the name called out was mine—Chloe Jepson.Once the video ended, a staff member gestured for me to take the stage. It was my first time standing in the spotlight like this, and I felt a little awkward as I nervously smoothed down my gown. When I looked at the crowd, I was met with looks of admiration from the media, my fellow film

When I returned to Kenford, I heard that Archie had managed to submit his competition entry right before the deadline.I rushed back to our place to pack up my belongings.Archie and I had been together for ten years.Yet, my luggage held nothing more than a few pieces of clothing and an old hard drive. The irony was that the hard drive had been destroyed in the sandstorm—along with all our memories.I took down every photo of us in the living room and packed them into boxes, along with the dozen notebooks I had filled while working on his s. Then I called a junk collector to haul it all away.Without looking back, I closed the door behind me and left.I changed my phone number and moved to Thassuri, where I started a film studio of my own.Back on the grasslands, I had promised myself that my name would appear in the most prominent place in every film I made. After I left Kenford, Archie kept texting me."Why did you move everything out of the house?"Where are you? Why can

When I woke up the next morning, I shut myself in my room and started packing. The room was filled with memories from mine and Archie's childhood. On the desk was a crooked drawing of me riding Jewel, with Archie holding her reins.Hanging on the wall were the kites we made as kids, with our names written on them.I calmly folded a few pieces of clothing and packed them away.Suddenly, loud noises echoed from outside, and Mr. Maddox rushed into the room.He said breathlessly, "Archie said he was making a movie, and the crew took Jewel away! She's old, and her legs are already in bad shape. She can't run anymore."My heart tightened, and I ran out after them.In the distance, Archie and Sharon had set up their equipment.Jewel looked visibly uneasy at the center of the frame.I walked over to Archie and confronted him. "You grew up riding Jewel, so you know that she's injured. There's no way she can carry someone through a long shoot."He waved me off and said, "You don't und

The next morning, I received an email from the competition committee. My film had received a very high score in the preliminary review, so they made an exception and advanced me straight to the final round. That was the kind of special treatment usually reserved for high-profile studios like Archie's. When I happily walked Jewel back to the orphanage after a stroll, the sun was already starting to set. That was when I ran into Archie and Sharon at the entrance. When he saw me, he looked surprised."Sharon and I had a discussion last night. We decided to come back here to shoot some additional footage. We can even feature Jewel."The orphanage has open fields, cattle, and horses. That's the kind of scenery we imagined for the film."Then he looked at me and asked, "Why did you follow us here, though? Look, you can stay and help the crew clean up if you want, but you need to stop throwing tantrums."I secured Jewel and calmly said, "No, thanks. I've already entered the competit
