"Please wait here, you'll be called when it's your turn," a woman in light blue said to Elena Wilson after work.
"Thank you." Elena lifted her lips. She sat in a waiting chair in front of the room where she would conduct the interview.
Elena considered the interview a miracle amid the tragedy that had befallen her family. Her father was depressed and committed suicide after his company went bankrupt. Her family was criticized and ostracized by the people they used to help. Elena and her mother hit rock bottom and had to fight from the bottom up to start a new life.
After being turned down by dozens of companies, Elena finally got an interview call from a major company. Elena hoped it would be the beginning of a renaissance for her family. She wanted to prove that she could restore Wilson's good name so that people wouldn't underestimate her.
"Miss Wilson!" A call caught Elena's attention.
"Yes, I am," Elena answered the call with a friendly smile.
"Come in! Mr. Harris is expecting you."
Elena got up and walked out of the waiting room. However, the cell phone in her pocket rang after only a few steps. A glance at the screen showed an unknown number calling.
"Sorry," Elena said to the woman waiting for her.
Elena declined the call. She deactivated the phone and put it back in her pocket. She didn't want to waste her golden opportunity to answer a call from a stranger.
The thirty-minute interview went smoothly. Elena got through every session perfectly. She was optimistic that the company would hire her.
"I'm pleased with all your answers." Mr. Harris nodded. "Come back tomorrow morning for another session."
"Okay. And thank you for the opportunity, Mr. Harris." Elena nodded respectfully with a graceful smile.
"Don't be late! Opportunity doesn't come twice, Miss Wilson," Mr. Harris advised.
"I understand," Elena agreed.
When she left the room, Elena couldn't wait to tell her mother the good news. She pulled her cell phone out of her pocket to call her mother. Instead, she found many unanswered calls from unknown numbers. Curiosity filled her mind. She quickly dialed the number and received the bad news that shattered her soul. Elena's mother had been in a car accident. She was in critical condition in the hospital.
Elena drove her car to the hospital at high speed. She was so frantic that she didn't care about her safety. She just wanted to get to the hospital and see her mother's condition.
When she arrived at the hospital, Elena ran to the information desk. But she was not paying attention, so she bumped into a man and almost fell over. Fortunately, the man quickly caught her.
"You okay?" The man asked.
The man's handsome face spellbound Elena. A face that looked familiar, but she couldn't remember where she had seen it before.
"Miss, are you okay?" The man repeated his question.
Elena blinked quickly and pulled away from his embrace as soon as she realized where they were.
"Sorry, I'm in a hurry," Elena said.
The man before Elena was about to speak when a voice called out.
"Elena!" A young doctor approached with quick steps.
"Doctor Evans!" Elena turned away and went straight to the doctor.
"I need to talk to you," Doctor Evans said under his breath. "I've tried calling you a few times, but..."
"How's my mom?" urged Elena, tears in her eyes.
Doctor Evans replied, "Your mom has severe kidney damage."
"Oh my God!" Elena covered her mouth with her palm.
"She could have lived with one kidney. But her other kidney was also failing," the doctor explained.
"What?" The joints all over Elena's body felt weak, and evil thoughts instantly swirled in her head.
"I'm sorry. I did my best," the doctor said, touching Elena's hand. "The only option is a transplant. Your mom needs a new kidney to survive."
The more information the doctor gave her, the more Elena's mind became frantic. Elena was ready to give her mother one of her kidneys if her mother's kidneys matched hers. Unfortunately, their blood types were not the same. How would the kidney match?
"Where can I get this kidney?" Tears fell from her eyes.
Elena was desperate. She didn't know where to find a kidney match for her mother. She couldn't go to the family who had insulted her pride. Elena cried in the hospital hallway, feeling that she had no hope that her mother would survive.
Not only because of the difficulty in finding a donor, but also because of the amount she had to prepare to get the kidney.
"Josh." Her boyfriend's name suddenly flashed through her mind.
Elena stood up quickly, as if on cue, and wiped away the tears. With shaking hands, she picked up her cell phone and dialed her boyfriend's number.
Josh's family is very wealthy. Josh would soon be running the family business. Therefore, Elena hoped that Josh would be willing to lend money to her mother's medical expenses.
"Come on, Josh, pick up the phone." Elena paced and bit her lip.
Elena called several times, but Josh didn't answer. Elena decided to go to the man's apartment. It took about thirty minutes to get there. Elena took the elevator to the 10th floor, then walked down the quiet hallway. Her destination was apartment number 1014, at the end of the corridor on the left. With great hope, Elena took a big step.
At the door of unit 1014, Elena stopped. A sudden doubt filled her mind. But her mother's condition forced her to suppress those doubts.
"You're my only hope, Josh." Elena took a deep breath and exhaled loudly.
Elena's birthday was the passcode to Josh's apartment. She punched in the numbers on the keypad and pushed the door open. She walked in and heard the faint sound of someone talking.
"Josh? Is he home yet?" Elena muttered, furrowing her brow.
She sharpened her ears and slowly walked towards the source of the sound: Josh's room. She could hear two different voices, a male and a female. Elena's heart raced. Her brain strongly denied that she recognized the owner of the voices. Her footsteps continued unbidden.
"So, when are you going to stop dating Elena? I get jealous every time I see you with her."
Elena was very familiar with the woman's voice.
"Soon, honey. I still need her to help me with my work."
And that was Josh's voice.
From the open door, Elena saw Josh cuddling with a woman. Bianca, her best friend. Elena covered her mouth as she began to cry uncontrollably.
"I love you, Josh. I'm tired of sneaking around with you like this," Bianca said.
"Bianca, darling. You know how much I love you, too, and... your whole body." Josh stroked Bianca's hair and kissed her lips.
Elena's whole world seemed shattered when she saw her boyfriend making out with her best friend, the one she trusted.
Elena sat on a chair in the living room, rocking gently on her baby's crib. The thought of Eric's uncle's visit made her uneasy. She didn't know who he was, but she felt uncomfortable being in a safe place with strangers. It all started with her escape. She wanted to tell Eric, but her reluctance held her back. Eric had been so kind, giving her a place to stay and helping her with everything. Who was she to refuse the presence of Eric's family? But Eric was a sensitive person. When he walked into the living room and saw Elena, he immediately saw the fear on her face."Abby, what's the matter? I've been watching you, and you look uncomfortable." Eric sat down on the couch across from Elena. "Did something happen to your baby?""My baby is fine," Elena replied, forcing a smile to her lips."So what? Is this about my uncle?" guessed Eric. He was certain that Elena was hiding something from him.Elena paused, glancing up at Eric momentarily before looking down again. "It's not like that.
A knock at the door woke Elena from her reverie. The baby had fallen asleep after a long cry. Elena felt relieved. However, the sound of the knock made her anxious. Cautiously, she went to the door and opened it slightly."Eric," she said with relief as she saw the man's face in the door's crack.Eric looked enthusiastic with a wide smile. But when he saw Elena's worried look, his smile faded and turned to concern."Are you okay?" asked Eric, his eyes looking worriedly at Elena. "You look pale."Elena tried to smile. "I'm fine. I'm just a little tired. My baby was crying all along, and I had difficulty calming her down," she replied as she opened the door wider to let Eric in.Eric nodded, although his expression showed he didn't quite believe it. He glanced at Elena's baby sleeping on a small mattress in the corner of the room and then looked back at Elena. "I brought you something," he said, holding up his two large shopping bags. "Please tell me if I missed anything," he continued
Elena sat on the sofa, trying to calm herself down after almost falling over earlier. Her baby was now fast asleep in her arms, which made the atmosphere a little more peaceful. Eric came back from the kitchen with a cup of tea."Here, have some. It will help calm you down," Eric said as he handed the cup to Elena.Elena accepted the tea with hands that were still slightly shaking. "Thank you, Eric. You always know what I need," she said quietly, gratefully.Eric smiled. "It's not a big deal. You need a lot of rest. I will ensure that everything goes well for you and your baby."Elena sipped the tea slowly, its warmth spreading through her body. She felt calm, although her heart still had a little uneasiness. Eric sat in the chair before her and looked at Elena with a concern that made her a little nervous. Their eyes met for some time. Elena broke the gaze and turned to her baby, looking down to hide her blushing face.Eric cleared his throat and tried to change the subject. "I just
Elena opened her eyes slowly, trying to make out the room around her. The white ceiling and the soft sounds of medical equipment were the first clues that she was in a hospital. Her body felt weak, but her breathing was more regular now. When she turned her head, she saw Eric sitting in a chair beside the bed, his face looking tired but relieved."Eric..." Elena whispered hoarsely.Eric stood up immediately and approached her. "Abby, you're awake. Thank God," he said with a relieved smile. "How you feeling?"Elena tried to recall what had happened. Flashes of events came through her mind - the two men in the street, the blood, the excruciating pain, and finally, the baby's cry. "Where am I?" she asked quietly."You're in the infirmary," Eric replied as he sat back down. "You were bleeding badly after the birth, but the doctor was able to save you. Everything is fine now."Elena looked at Eric with tear-filled eyes. "My baby..." she whispered, her voice full of panic. "Where is my baby
Elena's steps were heavy as she walked home from the restaurant where she worked. There had been some trouble at the restaurant, so she had to leave a little late. Exhaustion ruled her body, but the thought of her baby gave her the strength to keep going. She gently held her belly, relieved she had made it through the day without a hitch. But the relief didn't last long. A strange feeling overcame her as she walked down a small, deserted street. It felt as if eyes were watching her. Elena turned her head, but only the shadows of buildings and dim lights were in the distance. She tried to convince herself that it was just a feeling, nothing more.Pulling her jacket together, Elena quickened her pace. But then she heard footsteps behind her, echoing down the deserted street. She turned her head again, and two men emerged from the shadows. They approached with a look that sent shivers down Elena's spine. The smirks on their lips told her they wanted something from her."What do you want?
Lisbon was a different place than anything Elena had ever imagined. Her first year in that city was full of challenges, especially with her growing pregnancy. She had to start from scratch, with no connections or family support, and the threat of Sean's shadow constantly haunts her. Every step was hard, but she knew she had no other choice.Elena, who now goes by the name Abigail Winter, found that building a new life was not as easy as one might think. Applying for jobs was a big challenge. The skeptical look on managers' faces when they saw her growing belly only added to her sense of hopelessness. Rejection after rejection gnawed at her spirit, but she kept trying.Amid the dead end, a new friend came into her life. Eric, a man with a friendly smile and a laid-back attitude, became an unexpected savior. After their first meeting at the airport, Elena and Eric reunited at the local market when Elena tried to buy necessities on a minimal budget. Seeing her confusion, Eric offered her
The sound of splashing water woke Elena from her deep sleep. She blinked slowly, then furrowed her brow."God!" Elena groaned at the headache and hangover that hit her.Not only was she dizzy, but she could feel her whole body breaking down. All her joints felt stiff, and all the discomfort was cen

Elena stood in front of the door of the operating room, waiting for the doctor's answer, anxiety gripping her mind. She paced and bit her lip."You have to survive, Mom. I'll do whatever it takes to save you," Elena murmured.Sean came from the opposite direction, his steps steady and confident. As
Elena's heartbeat started to go crazy. Her blood seemed to flow in a different direction. The voice sounded deep and calm, reminding Elena of an intoxicating situation. Seductive whispers and erotic sighs seeped into Elena's ears, invading her memory with scenes of heat and pleasure that sent shive
