"Forgive me, father, for I have sinned" I said, the words leaving my mouth for like the millionth time. And honestly, every time I said it I meant it a little differently and today it was about a man I shot last Tuesday. I didn't kill him...but still... The guilt every time I shot someone sits in my chest like a stone all week until I go to church and confess. I mean can you really blame me? I'm a catholic, born and raised, that's what my Nana taught me. The church today was empty, the morning sunlight was filtering through the stained-glass windows in the church, making Jesus look like he was wearing a crown of fire. The incense was giving me a headache and the kneeler was destroying my knees and yet, here I was, Katherine Bishop, turning 24 years old today, a detective asking God for forgiveness. But I was so damn proud of myself. The moment I stood up from the kneeler and stepped outside the confession booth my phone rang and I frowned. "Of course I just can't have one peaceful morning" I mumbled walking out of the church. "Katherine" Harris barked the moment the phone touched my ear, "we've got eyes on Petrov" "Where" I asked my pulse quickening. Harris sent me the location immediately and my eyes widened because I was only 10 minutes away. "Move fast, this is our last chance" Harris said. I hung up immediately and jumped into my car, driving as fast as I could. Alexei Petrov. We've been looking for this criminal for seven months, seven. He was like a shadow. We had been tracking him for months and nothing but cold dead ends. When I arrived, officers had already flooded the area, Petrov spotted us immediately and ran. "Damn it" I yelled, pulling my gun out. I ran after him. The chase was too chaotic for me. He was too fast but how? He was big and looked like he ate cars for breakfast, so how could he run so annoyingly fast. We ran through an alleyway, jumped over a fence and he squeezed through spaces that should have been impossible for him to pass through. Until we hit a dead end. I was running too fast, I was too eager to catch him and I had made a mistake. Just when I didn't expect him to stop, he did, and he was now pointing a gun to the back of my head. 'Okay. Okay. Think Katherine. Think.' "Put the gun down Petrov" I said, with both my hands in the air and my gun pointing towards the sky. "My team is seconds away, there's nowhere to run" I said, trying to sound as calm as possible. He laughed. "Looks like the great detective Katherine isn't so great after all" he sneered. I clenched my jaw. I couldn't be fast enough, I could not outrun a bullet. Being held at gunpoint was the worst thing to happen to me on my birthday. "Duck" someone said and my eyes widened. Without thinking, I obeyed, I didn't know why I did that, I just dropped straight to the ground and a shot rang out the moment my palms hit the ground. I heard Petrov scream, he was down, holding his knee. Well now he wasn't going anywhere. I quickly looked up at my saviour, a member from my team maybe. Big no, not a police officer, a man, he was wearing a dark coat, tall, gray eyes and completely unbothered. For a moment my brain completely stopped working. I knew his face. And then it hit me. Viktor. I recognised his face from the files. Files so thick they needed their own shelf. The man the entire department of the force had been trying to catch for years and he made us look like absolute fools every single time we thought we were close. I stared. Still in shock. And he just stood there, staring back. I heard Petrov mumble something and I turned back to look for just a second, before I could turn again, Viktor was gone and my team was already with us. The precint was chaos for the rest of the day. Everyone celebrated the arrest, everyone congratulated me. Random slaps on the back, someone even brought cake. I was the hero of the day, I smiled and accepted the praise but I never brought up the fact that I saw Viktor. Not once. Not even to my supervisor, Harris who was most proud of me. Why? I didn't know. Was it because he saved me? I just had this feeling I couldn't shake off and every time I blinked I saw him. Gray eyes. So I buried it. Kept quiet and headed home at the end of the day but unfortunately the day wasn't over. I turned 24 today and I hadn't really celebrated besides the precint. I took a shower and wore a new dress I shopped just some days ago with Gabriella. Wore my best heels and dolled up. Daniel, my boyfriend had been acting strange for the past week. Secretive, nervous, distracted. With my detective skills, I knew he was going to propose. My best friend Gabriella was so sure about it. And we had already made plans to meet at his place. A small smile spread across my face at the thought. So I drove to his house and was there in no time. His front door was unlocked. That was unusual. I walked in, then called out his name, but no answer. When I walked in further, I heard moans and my heart skipped. I was pretty sure it was nothing, just the TV, maybe he was just getting ready for me. I chuckled nervously. When I got to his bedroom door and opened it... It wasn't the TV. Daniel, and a woman, naked on his bed. Not just any woman, my childhood ex best friend. The same one that betrayed me. The same one I told Daniel about and how I couldn't forgive her. On the bed, with my boyfriend. "Katherine..." Daniel called out to me. I just stood there, staring at them. Unable to breath or think. And then my eyes met his. Suddenly, being held at gunpoint earlier was no longer the worse thing that had happened to me on my birthday.KATHY"Mama"Anya jumped out of her chair, running towards the lady. The lady barely even reacted. I expect a warm reunion, a hug or a smile but nothing. She must be Natalia. Anya's mother. She was beautiful. Long dark hair that was probably dyed one too many times, I could see some blonde hair in the roots, blue eyes, perfect make-up, expensive clothes. Anya stopped just before she reached her waiting to be hugged by her mama. But Natalia only glanced down at her then walked past right her.My stomach twisted. She walked towards me, her gaze travelled from my head to my toe. Sizing me up. Judging me. "Who are you?" She asked again. Her accent was American, or at least she was trying very hard for it to be."Katherine Bishop" I responded lightly. "The tutor" she said, her tone making it sound like an insult. But I smiled politely. If I could deal with people like my stepsister, Iris, then I could deal with people like Natalia. "Yes, the tutor" I replied. She looked at me again, a
KATHY"Fuck" I cursed, nearly jumping out of my own skin. I gripped my chest, heart pounding. I thought I was dead or going to be killed. I quickly spun around to look at the person that nearly gave me a heart attack. It was a tiny person, a little girl. She stood in the doorway, clutching a teddy bear. Stitch, from Lilo and Stitch.Blonde hair, blue eyes. She stared back at me totally unimpressed.Like I just got here and I'm already snooping around, worse I got caught."What?" I asked. The little girl sighed dramatically. "Dyadya Vik ne lyubit, kogda lyudi zakhodyat v ego kabinet."I blinked. "I don't speak Russian" I said softly. Another dramatic sigh."Uncle Vik" she started, pointing at the room then putting a finger on her neck and dragging it to the other side. She was trying to tell me he would kill me if he found me in here.I slowly backed away from the shelf. She raised a brow. She probably learnt that that from her "Uncle Vik" "Spy" she suddenly said and I ran out
KATHYI should have been terrified.Instead I was excited. This was a blessing in disguise. It was the perfect way to infiltrate his home.It was easier this way. Maybe this made me a bad detective but I didn't have much of a choice. I was still a little bit scared because I was about to move into a Mafia boss's Mansion, that was probably filled with armed men that would probably kill me if they found out about me. He paid for Nana's medical bills and I couldn't say no to his offer, not while Nana was still recovering. So here I was, standing in front of a massive black gate. Viktor Svyatoslav's estate. My heart was beating a little too fast. Not because of him. Definitely not because of him. Because my undercover job seemed to be coming easier than I'd expected. The tutoring position solved multiple problems. I could earn more money. I would be close to my target. Gather information and be out of here as soon as I possibly could. That was simple. At least that's the plan.
KATHYI was in the hospital room with Nana praying for her to wake up and regretting my actions. I should have stopped when she asked us to but I was too blinded by anger. The doctor came into the office doing their regular thing but I was confused. They said they wouldn't commence treatment until all the bills had been paid.Did they have a change of heart seeing that she was an older woman?"Thank you so much for treating my grandmother, I'll balance up the bills as soon as I possibly can" I thanked with gratitude. The doctor looked at me confused."All the bills has been paid for" he said. What did he mean all the bills had been paid for? "I don't understand"I didn't pay the bill. Couldn't. Even with my salary I still couldn't save much because of Nana's constant medicine.Iris didn't even care about Nana's health, I had to do everything myself. And after putting Nana in this state she ran away again. Like she always did.I took out all my savings and my insurance covered part
VIKTORMoney was a language. The only language I understand. Most people think that having power is most important but they're wrong. Money is the most important to have because with money comes power. And unlike people, money barely lied. Every dollar had a trail. You're looking for someone? Track their credit or debit cards. Go to gas stations where they probably used cash.It is so easy to find someone with their paper trail, except that someone was me. I sat behind my desk, scrolling through reports as the morning sunlight spilled into my office. Investments. Construction projects. Shipping routes. Hospitals. The hospital caught my attention immediately so I flipped through the reports again and again. The numbers were unusually low. Most people in my position would have ignored small problems like this but not me. A drop of water can make a river. A knock came in through the door before it opened.Romanov. "You have a meeting in an hour" he said briefly. I nodded the
KATHY"Katherine" Iris said, "you look tired" "Iris" I said keeping my voice flat, devoid of any emotions. "What are you doing here?" "I came to visit Nana. Is that suddenly a crime?" She asked sweetly, tilting her head. "Although judging by the state of you, I would say you're the one who's been up to something interesting" And the picture Daniel showed me that morning flashed in my head and it hit me.My stomach dropped.Iris had been the one who drugged me and took that photo of me and Viktor at the 11:11 club.I still didn't know where Nana was because she didn't come out at the sound of voices."I heard about your boyfriend... Daniel was it?" She said, a cunning smile appearing on her lips. "Such a shame though isn't it. Men can't just leave their dicks in their pants"I knew exactly what she was doing. But I wasn't going to let her get in my head, not today. "Although I heard you've already moved on so quickly" she continued, her smile widening. "And how would you know anyt
KATHYI opened my eyes groggily, for a moment I had no idea where I was.I was in a bed that was not mine and that was the first problem. The second problem was that the sheets were too expensive. The sheets would cost higher than my rent... If I paid rent. The third problem was that I sat down too
KATHYThe thing about going undercover to seduce information out of a Mafia lord when you're 24 hours post betrayal, heartbreak and working on just a birthday cake in your stomach with just 3 hours of sleep... It is not the best idea.I knew this. But I accepted the mission anyways. If I catch this
KATHY"Katherine, Katherine" Daniel called out to me while I was walking as fast as my legs could carry me.My hands were shaking and my heels were suddenly too loud that my feet felt numb. My chest hurt so badly that I couldn't breathe properly."Katherine, wait!" he said again. "It's not what you
VIKTOR Most people bored me. Politicians. Business men. Criminals. They all bored me. They all wanted something. Money. Power. Revenge. The only difference was how honest they were about it. I was sitting in the bar exactly 11 minutes before she walked into the bar. She was trying not to lo
