KATHY

"Fuck" I cursed, nearly jumping out of my own skin.

I gripped my chest, heart pounding. I thought I was dead or going to be killed.

I quickly spun around to look at the person that nearly gave me a heart attack.

It was a tiny person, a little girl.

She stood in the doorway, clutching a teddy bear. Stitch, from Lilo and Stitch.

Blonde hair, blue eyes.

She stared back at me totally unimpressed.

Like I just got here and I'm already snooping around, worse I got caught.

"What?" I asked.

The little girl sighed dramatically.

"Dyadya Vik ne lyubit, kogda lyudi zakhodyat v ego kabinet."

I blinked.

"I don't speak Russian" I said softly.

Another dramatic sigh.

"Uncle Vik" she started, pointing at the room then putting a finger on her neck and dragging it to the other side.

She was trying to tell me he would kill me if he found me in here.

I slowly backed away from the shelf.

She raised a brow.

She probably learnt that that from her "Uncle Vik"

"Spy" she suddenly said and I ran out of the room shutting the door behind me.

"I was not spying" I said, defending myself.

"Yes"

"No" I said again. "I was exploring"

She looked confused, so I tried to use my hands, myself and the house to describe "exploring"

This was going to be hard.

She got what I was saying but she didn't believe me anyways.

I wanted to defend myself further but I stopped. She was right. I was indeed spying.

"I'm Kathy" I said gesturing with my hand.

"Anya" she replied.

If she didn't have her uncle's character in so many ways, she would have been so cute. Not that she isn't, but way cuter.

She was too smart to be an 8 year old.

A normal kid that age wouldn't know what spying was.

"Nam pora idti," she said finally. "Prezhde chem on proverit kamery"

I could tell she wanted us to leave.

"Kamery?" I asked confused.

She rolled her eyes.

"Ka-me-ry" she said again.

"Camera?" I asked.

She nodded, pleased with herself.

I felt my stomach drop straight through the floor.

"Cameras," I repeated carefully.

Anya smiled then pointed to her eyes and to the surrounding.

She was trying to tell me he had eyes everywhere.

Fuck.

The first thing I did after escaping the study and Anya's judgemental stare was run back to my room. My pulse was still not entirely settled from the whole camera thing.

How did I not notice them?

In fact, I still couldn't find them.

I groaned into my pillow. How did I end up here?

A month ago my biggest problem was catching criminals and trying not to strangle Iris.

Now I was inside this... place. A Mafia's house.

A Mafia who knew where I lived, my Nana and possibly Gabby.

A Mafia boss I had slept with.

I have to focus. I came here for one thing and one thing only. To put the people who killed my parents behind bars. To completely bring down the Russian Mafia.

My phone buzzed.

Gabriella.

Finally.

I answered immediately.

"You're alive"

"Disappointed?"

I smiled.

"There she is"

Gabby laughed heartily.

The sound of her laughter eased some of the tension in my chest.

"I need a favour" I kept my voice low. "Can you check on Nana for me? Just a few days, I'm... away. For work"

"What happened to Nana?" She asked shocked.

"She had a heart attack" I breathed out.

"What? How?"

"Long story. We'll catch up soon. So can you?"

"Define "away"" she said like she didn't trust me.

"Gabriella"

"Fine, fine, mysterious as always" she said and I could hear her moving around. "Yes of course, you know I'd do anything for Nana, you didn't have to ask twice"

"Thank you" I said with relief.

"Where exactly are you though..."

"Work thing" I said too quickly, cutting her off. "Where have you been by the way?"

"Nowhere. Just busy" she said easily.

"Gabby"

"It's nothing Katherine, I promise"

I let it go, like always.

I just hoped whatever this was wasn't bigger than both of us. Because if push comes to shove, I'd kill for her. I'd die for her.

She was my other half.

Viktor's face came into my head for a moment and my heart skipped. I shrugged it off immediately.

"Okay... Keep me updated on Nana"

"Will do"

__________

The next morning I got up, took a shower, got dressed and wandered downstairs.

The mansion was beginning to feel less intimidating.

It was still big though.

There were dozens of staffs and security guards everywhere.

Still... the house felt empty.

'Did Viktor come home last night?' I thought.

A small frown creeped into my face.

Why would I be upset if he wasn't here?

I kept on moving around the house, no one was really paying any attention to me, besides the guards. Their eyes were following me like a hawk.

I ignored them and pretended like I wasn't in the house for bad reasons. Reasons enough for them to kill me.

A few moments later, I found myself thinking about how I used to live in something like this.

Not this big, but something close.

Before they both disappeared.

By afternoon it was finally time for Anya's lesson. To my surprise, the girl was already waiting for me in the study room.

She sat with a book in front of her. When she noticed my presence she looked up.

"Late" she said.

She was a feisty little kid.

"Good afternoon to you too"

She shrugged, probably not understanding what I had just said.

I started the lesson and thankfully she was quicker than most people her age.

The problem was her attitude. Needs a little work.

She followed everything I said and tried to repeat them... In English. Her accent was thick but she would be better with time.

We were going through a paragraph when the door suddenly opened.

A woman walked in and before I could even process anything she asked with disgust in her tone and face.

"Who are you?"

  • Falling For The Mafia   10: The job is yours

KATHYI should have been terrified.Instead I was excited. This was a blessing in disguise. It was the perfect way to infiltrate his home.It was easier this way. Maybe this made me a bad detective but I didn't have much of a choice. I was still a little bit scared because I was about to move into a Mafia boss's Mansion, that was probably filled with armed men that would probably kill me if they found out about me. He paid for Nana's medical bills and I couldn't say no to his offer, not while Nana was still recovering. So here I was, standing in front of a massive black gate. Viktor Svyatoslav's estate. My heart was beating a little too fast. Not because of him. Definitely not because of him. Because my undercover job seemed to be coming easier than I'd expected. The tutoring position solved multiple problems. I could earn more money. I would be close to my target. Gather information and be out of here as soon as I possibly could. That was simple. At least that's the plan.

  • Falling For The Mafia   9: You will work for me

KATHYI was in the hospital room with Nana praying for her to wake up and regretting my actions. I should have stopped when she asked us to but I was too blinded by anger. The doctor came into the office doing their regular thing but I was confused. They said they wouldn't commence treatment until all the bills had been paid.Did they have a change of heart seeing that she was an older woman?"Thank you so much for treating my grandmother, I'll balance up the bills as soon as I possibly can" I thanked with gratitude. The doctor looked at me confused."All the bills has been paid for" he said. What did he mean all the bills had been paid for? "I don't understand"I didn't pay the bill. Couldn't. Even with my salary I still couldn't save much because of Nana's constant medicine.Iris didn't even care about Nana's health, I had to do everything myself. And after putting Nana in this state she ran away again. Like she always did.I took out all my savings and my insurance covered part

  • Falling For The Mafia   8: The monthly reports

VIKTORMoney was a language. The only language I understand. Most people think that having power is most important but they're wrong. Money is the most important to have because with money comes power. And unlike people, money barely lied. Every dollar had a trail. You're looking for someone? Track their credit or debit cards. Go to gas stations where they probably used cash.It is so easy to find someone with their paper trail, except that someone was me. I sat behind my desk, scrolling through reports as the morning sunlight spilled into my office. Investments. Construction projects. Shipping routes. Hospitals. The hospital caught my attention immediately so I flipped through the reports again and again. The numbers were unusually low. Most people in my position would have ignored small problems like this but not me. A drop of water can make a river. A knock came in through the door before it opened.Romanov. "You have a meeting in an hour" he said briefly. I nodded the

  • Falling For The Mafia   7: I’m done with you

KATHY"Katherine" Iris said, "you look tired" "Iris" I said keeping my voice flat, devoid of any emotions. "What are you doing here?" "I came to visit Nana. Is that suddenly a crime?" She asked sweetly, tilting her head. "Although judging by the state of you, I would say you're the one who's been up to something interesting" And the picture Daniel showed me that morning flashed in my head and it hit me.My stomach dropped.Iris had been the one who drugged me and took that photo of me and Viktor at the 11:11 club.I still didn't know where Nana was because she didn't come out at the sound of voices."I heard about your boyfriend... Daniel was it?" She said, a cunning smile appearing on her lips. "Such a shame though isn't it. Men can't just leave their dicks in their pants"I knew exactly what she was doing. But I wasn't going to let her get in my head, not today. "Although I heard you've already moved on so quickly" she continued, her smile widening. "And how would you know anyt

  • Falling For The Mafia   6: 3 months

KATHY When the car came to a stop I looked out the window then froze. My house. My actual house? A chill ran down my spine immediately. How did he know where I and Nana lived? I looked at him and a small smile creeped up his lips. He knew what I was about to ask. I decided to brush it off with the other things about him that I didn't have the energy to examine yet. He finally let go off my waist as if telling me it was time to go. I awkwardly climbed out of the car and the moment I got out, the car pulled away. I looked around to make sure nobody was watching. Before going into the house. I tried hard not to think about everything that happened last night, not like I could remember much. But fact that I spent it at a Mafia boss's pent house. What the hell was I thinking? This wasn't how my life was supposed to be going... at all. I entered the house as quietly as I could so I wouldn't wake Nana, but unfortunately she was already awake. She was drinki

KATHY"Forgive me, father, for I have sinned" I said, the words leaving my mouth for like the millionth time. And honestly, every time I said it I meant it a little differently and today it was about a man I shot last Tuesday. I didn't kill him...but still...The guilt every time I shot someone si

KATHYI opened my eyes groggily, for a moment I had no idea where I was.I was in a bed that was not mine and that was the first problem. The second problem was that the sheets were too expensive. The sheets would cost higher than my rent... If I paid rent. The third problem was that I sat down too

  • Falling For The Mafia   4: I need you

VIKTOR Most people bored me. Politicians. Business men. Criminals. They all bored me. They all wanted something. Money. Power. Revenge. The only difference was how honest they were about it. I was sitting in the bar exactly 11 minutes before she walked into the bar. She was trying not to lo

KATHY"Katherine, Katherine" Daniel called out to me while I was walking as fast as my legs could carry me.My hands were shaking and my heels were suddenly too loud that my feet felt numb. My chest hurt so badly that I couldn't breathe properly."Katherine, wait!" he said again. "It's not what you
