Chapter 4 – When the World Watches

The scandal broke the next morning.

I woke up to my phone vibrating nonstop.

Unknown numbers. Missed calls. Messages from people I barely talk to.

And one message from Mara.

“Lila, please tell me this isn’t true.”

My stomach dropped.

I opened social media.

There it was.

Photos from last night.

Me and Ethan talking. Smiling.

But cropped.

Edited.

Headlines already spinning narratives.

CEO’s New Wife Reunites with Ex-Lover at Gala.

Trouble in the Hayes Marriage?

Was the Marriage Just a Business Cover?

My chest tightened.

It wasn’t even true.

I barely spoke to Ethan.

The penthouse door opened behind me.

I didn’t need to turn around to know it was Logan.

“Who leaked it?” I asked quietly.

He didn’t answer immediately.

That silence was worse.

I turned.

He was already dressed. Calm. Composed.

Too composed.

“They wanted a reaction,” he said.

“And you’re not reacting?”

His eyes moved to my phone screen.

“They want to destabilize the board before next quarter.”

“So this is business?”

“It’s always business.”

I swallowed.

Except it didn’t feel like business.

It felt personal.

“Are you angry?” I asked.

He stepped closer.

Not threatening.

Not intense.

Just close enough to make my pulse shift.

“Not at you.”

“Then at who?”

His jaw tightened slightly.

“At whoever thinks they can use you.”

That did something to my chest.

Because that wasn’t about reputation.

That was about me.

By noon, the board demanded a public statement.

Logan’s assistant scheduled a press conference.

“You don’t have to attend,” he told me.

“You said people need to see me.”

“I can handle it alone.”

The difference in his tone wasn’t lost on me.

Before, it was strategy.

Now, it was protection.

“I’ll go,” I said.

His eyes lifted to mine.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

A small pause.

Then a nod.

“Stay next to me.”

The press conference room was packed.

Cameras. Lights. Reporters waiting for blood.

Logan walked in first.

I followed.

The whispers started immediately.

“That’s her.”

“She looks calm.”

“Too calm.”

Logan placed his hand lightly at the small of my back again.

Not possessive this time.

Grounding.

A reporter stood immediately.

“Mr. Hayes, are the rumors about your wife and Mr. Carter true?”

Direct.

Aggressive.

Logan didn’t even blink.

“No.”

“Were they previously involved?”

Silence.

I felt the room lean forward.

Logan’s voice remained steady.

“My wife’s past friendships are not a scandal.”

Another reporter cut in.

“Then why were they seen smiling intimately?”

My jaw tightened.

Before Logan could answer, I stepped forward slightly.

“It’s called being polite,” I said clearly.

The room shifted.

Cameras turned fully toward me.

I could feel Logan’s eyes on me.

Not stopping me.

Watching.

“I’ve known Ethan for years,” I continued. “He’s a friend. That doesn’t threaten my marriage.”

The word felt heavy on my tongue.

Marriage.

A reporter smirked. “So you’re saying there’s no tension at home?”

That question was designed to humiliate.

To create cracks.

Logan stepped closer beside me.

His hand didn’t grip.

But I felt him there.

Solid.

“There is no tension,” he said calmly. “And if there were, it wouldn’t concern you.”

The firmness in his tone silenced the room.

Another reporter tried one last time.

“Is this marriage based on love?”

The question hung in the air.

Dangerous.

Because neither of us had said that word.

Not once.

Logan didn’t look at the reporters.

He looked at me.

And for a split second, something vulnerable passed between us.

Then he faced forward.

“It’s based on commitment.”

The answer wasn’t romantic.

But it wasn’t cold either.

It was intentional.

And somehow, that felt more real.

Back in the car, the silence felt different.

Not tense.

Not angry.

Just… heavy.

“You didn’t have to defend me,” he said finally.

“I wasn’t defending you.”

His eyebrow lifted slightly.

“I was defending myself.”

A small pause.

Then something unexpected.

He smiled.

Not the arrogant one.

Not the controlled CEO smile.

A real one.

“You did well,” he admitted.

“Were you worried?” I asked.

He didn’t answer immediately.

Which meant yes.

“I don’t like when they attack you,” he said finally.

“Because it affects business?”

His eyes shifted to me.

“No.”

Just that.

No explanation.

No elaboration.

And that one word carried more weight than a paragraph would have.

That night, I found him on the balcony.

No jacket.

Sleeves rolled up.

City lights reflecting in his eyes.

“You could’ve shut it down without me,” I said, stepping beside him.

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

The wind moved lightly between us.

“You trust me?” I asked.

He didn’t hesitate this time.

“Yes.”

The answer startled me.

“Even after Ethan?”

His jaw tightened slightly.

“I don’t trust him.”

“But you trust me.”

“Yes.”

The simplicity of it made my chest ache.

“You’re not what they think,” he said quietly.

“What do they think?”

“That you’re a pawn.”

I swallowed.

“And what am I?”

His gaze moved over my face slowly.

“You’re the only variable I didn’t calculate.”

My heart skipped.

“That sounds dangerous.”

“It is.”

Silence stretched between us again.

But this time, it wasn’t heavy.

It was charged with something softer.

Something shifting.

“You said earlier it’s based on commitment,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Not love.”

His expression didn’t change.

“Love is unstable.”

“And you hate unstable things.”

“I eliminate them.”

A small pause.

“But you didn’t eliminate me.”

His eyes locked with mine.

“No.”

The air between us tightened.

Not aggressive.

Not jealous.

Something deeper.

“Why?” I whispered.

He stepped closer.

Not enough to touch.

Just enough to make it impossible to look away.

“Because for the first time in a long time,” he said quietly, “I don’t want control.”

That confession hit harder than jealousy ever could.

“You don’t?”

“Not with you.”

The honesty made my defenses crack slightly.

“I’m still figuring this out,” I admitted.

“So am I.”

That surprised me.

“You?”

“Yes.”

The powerful, untouchable Logan Hayes… unsure?

It made him human.

And that was far more dangerous than his possessiveness.

Because now I wasn’t just fighting his control.

I was fighting my own feelings.

“You’re not going to forbid me from seeing Ethan?” I asked softly.

His jaw tightened.

“No.”

“Even if you hate it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His answer came slower this time.

“Because I’d rather you choose me freely… than stay because you have to.”

The wind moved between us again.

But now my heart was louder than the city below.

That wasn’t obsession.

That wasn’t control.

That was risk.

And he was taking it.

For me.

I stepped a little closer.

Close enough that our shoulders almost brushed.

“You’re not as ruthless as people think,” I murmured.

He glanced at me.

“Don’t ruin my reputation.”

I almost smiled.

For the first time since signing that contract, I didn’t feel trapped.

I felt… considered.

And that changed everything.
