Chapter 3

Author: Noisy Whispers
I gave Meryl a mocking smile. "I don't deserve to be your friend. My existence will only be a stain on your reputation. Don't you think so?"

Her expression shifted drastically, and she hurried after me. "This won't affect our friendship. Adam, come back! Do you hear me?"

I didn't respond to her anymore. I simply kept walking, leaving Meryl far behind.

When I returned to my dorm, I prepared all the documents I needed to study abroad and went to see my advisor to apply for an exchange program.

There was a two-year international program available. When I returned, I would immediately graduate. It was the fastest way I could find to leave this place.

However, when the advisor saw the blood covering my body, he sent me straight to the infirmary without even asking me about what had happened.

When I entered, I saw Kara carefully treating Jackson's wounds.

Kara had once pursued me. In my previous life, however, she chose to stand by her best friend Jackson without hesitation.

When I refused to apologize, she was furious enough to record a video and upload it to the campus forum, calling on everyone to isolate me.

As a result, during the three days I was locked inside the abandoned classroom, not a single student who passed by chose to respond to my desperate slamming and cries for help.

When Kara saw me at the infirmary, the warmth that used to fill her bright, round eyes disappeared. Instead, she looked at me warily.

"How do you still have the nerve to come here? Jackson is severely injured because of you. There's barely a patch of good skin left on him, and he's in unbearable pain right now. If you're not here to apologize, leave."

It was hard to believe that the same person who was now looking at me with hatred had only yesterday shyly handed me a pink love letter. She had whispered in my ear that she was into me.

Jackson forced himself to stand up, pretending to be magnanimous and willing to forgive.

"Kara, don't get mad at him. He probably didn't mean for any of this to happen. It rained yesterday, and the rooftop was slippery. It's understandable that he accidentally pushed me."

Hearing that only darkened Kara's expression even more. She laughed coldly. "No way. The rain from yesterday had already dried up. He clearly shoved you on purpose!"

She turned to me. "Adam, Jackson comes from a single-parent family. His mother is bedridden. Have you ever thought about how devastated she'd be if he died from the fall you caused?"

Jackson quickly stopped Kara, who seemed hostile toward me. "I'm sorry. Did I say something I shouldn't have? Please don't let this create a rift between you two. I know you have feelings for him, Kara."

She scoffed and spat, "Ew. No, I don't."

If this had been my previous life, I would've desperately tried to prove my innocence in front of Kara. Now, instead of getting angry, I calmly looked at Jackson.

"I'm sorry. It was indeed my mistake for accidentally pushing you. I hope you can give me a chance to make up for it. To show you how much I mean it, I'll apologize to you in front of the whole campus."

My words left both of them stunned. After all, the last time we met, I had made it clear that I would never back down.

But I figured it out now. The public apology would just be an act. Anyone could do it. If I really wanted to perform, I could very much outshine Jackson in that aspect.

Kara looked at me, her tone softening slightly. "If you're willing to do that, I suppose there's no need to do it in front of the whole campus. Just apologize to Jackson in person."

Meanwhile, Jackson was no longer as calm as before. He stared at me with suspicion. After all, he knew better than anyone that I had never pushed him off the rooftop.

When I walked out of the infirmary, Kara followed me from behind. She stuffed some bandages and medicine into my hands. "Adam, use these to treat your injuries."

I didn't refuse, but simply asked, "How much are they? I'll wire the money to you."

She looked rather awkward. "You used to take care of me like this before. Why are you being so weird now? We don't have to draw such clear lines between us."

Little did she expect that my following words would catch her off guard.

Sally spoke to me as if nothing terrible had happened between us, or as if the woman who once said cruel things to me in defense of Jackson had never existed. At that thought, rage surged inside me. I silently affirmed to myself ten times, "Be the bigger person."Then I quickly finished the last few bites, stood, and prepared to leave.Sally stopped me, her gaze lingering fervently on my face. "Why do I feel like you've grown distant from me? Are you still mad at me? Or did you hear something from someone else?"It's true that I spoke up for Jackson and helped reduce his punishment, but no matter how wrong he was, it wasn't enough to affect his graduation. If that left a bad taste in your mouth, I can apologize to you on his behalf. Okay?"Anyway, studying abroad and living in a new environment must be difficult to adapt to. I can help you with your coursework and find research papers and references. How does that sound?"I stopped in my tracks. I had to say, Sally knew exactly h

Without giving me a chance to refuse, Meryl followed me back to my rented place. I had no idea what she was planning.I wasn't happy about her showing up unannounced, but in a foreign country where things could get dangerous, I still couldn't bring myself to throw her out onto the streets.Suddenly, Meryl stopped me just as I was about to return to my room. Her expression became slightly awkward."I'm sorry, Adam. Back then, I didn't know you went up there to save Jackson. When I saw him looking so helpless, I instinctively believed him. I wrongly accused you about what happened with him, and I'm sorry."Although I had known her for years, seeing the proud campus belle concede and apologize was something I had never witnessed before. Her attitude was sincere, but unfortunately, my heart no longer stirred. When I needed her trust the most, she actively chose not to stand by my side. Now that I had already swallowed all my grievances and moved on, I finally understood something.I

After arriving at my destination, I spent a few days finding a place to live. Then I applied for a part-time job near the campus to familiarize myself with my new surroundings.During that time, a good friend from back home told me that the footage had been uploaded to the campus forum. Now, everyone was demanding that Jackson be punished."Not getting the scholarship meant he wasn't good enough. He should've accepted it and moved on. Instead, he went up to the rooftop to make a scene. He's seriously disrupting the campus environment and encouraging a terrible attitude!""On top of that, he deliberately hurt someone. Adam Youngblood was clearly trying to save him, yet he shoved him onto the concrete ground and left him covered in injuries. What an ingrate!""I used to be fooled by Jackson's honest and harmless appearance. Turns out, he's twisted inside. I'm never going to associate with him again. I'll avoid him if I see him."After I finished reading the screenshot of comments, m

Meryl came up to me, glaring with her beautiful eyes. "Adam, was pushing Jackson off the rooftop not enough for you? You're tormenting him in a different way now?"What exactly did he ever do to you that makes you go so far just to target him? I truly misjudged you. I even thought that after you agreed to apologize, you were someone willing to turn over a new leaf…"Before she could continue her words, I cut her off and finished her sentence for her. "Let me guess. You're going to say I'm not allowed to leave, and whatever I do, I have to apologize to him and explain everything to the students. Right?"Meryl looked slightly surprised that I had predicted her words so accurately. She nodded and crossed her arms. "I'm glad that you're at least self-aware. I don't need to waste my breath.""Oh," I said, laughing. "Then here's my answer—I'm not doing any of that."Her face turned red with anger, just like Sally's earlier. Deep inside, I was amused. After all the defending they had don

After taking a cab, I arrived at the airport and waited in the departure lounge for my flight. Since I had booked it in a hurry, I could only get a ticket for a flight two hours later.Even so, I couldn't wait to get out of this place. While I was waiting, my phone kept blowing up with texts from my friends."Adam, did you play that video in the auditorium today? You freaked us all out.""As soon as that video ended, Meryl and Kara took off like they'd gone crazy. Jackson also ran after them.""They didn't look good, though. They seemed furious, even. Wait—they're not coming after you, are they?"They were excitedly gossiping about the incident, trying to extract more information out of me. I skimmed through the messages but didn't reply to anyone. Then, I noticed a message from my roommate."Hey, Adam. Professor Robinson seems to be asking around about you. She found out about the exchange program and went to the office. She looked really flustered."My finger paused above the

"No, we do," I said. "We're not that close, after all."Kara's face turned pale. She looked at me in disbelief. "Adam, what are you talking about?"I smiled and walked away without replying to her.The next day, the faculty member in charge of the exchange program informed me that my application had been approved and asked me to sign the paperwork. When I finished and walked out of the office, I ran into Sally. She was dressed in professional attire, paired with high heels. Not only was she a professor at this college, but she was also Mom's distant relative. Thus, our families had always kept in touch. After I started college, she had always taken good care of me—except when it came to Jackson, the student she sponsored. In my previous life, to get justice for Jackson, Sally reported the matter to the administration and requested that I receive the harshest punishment possible. She also called my family. When Mom heard that I had bullied a friend at school, she became so angry
