Chapter 4

Author: Noisy Whispers
"No, we do," I said. "We're not that close, after all."

Kara's face turned pale. She looked at me in disbelief. "Adam, what are you talking about?"

I smiled and walked away without replying to her.

The next day, the faculty member in charge of the exchange program informed me that my application had been approved and asked me to sign the paperwork.

When I finished and walked out of the office, I ran into Sally. She was dressed in professional attire, paired with high heels. Not only was she a professor at this college, but she was also Mom's distant relative.

Thus, our families had always kept in touch. After I started college, she had always taken good care of me—except when it came to Jackson, the student she sponsored.

In my previous life, to get justice for Jackson, Sally reported the matter to the administration and requested that I receive the harshest punishment possible.

She also called my family. When Mom heard that I had bullied a friend at school, she became so angry that she couldn't catch her breath and suffered a heart attack.

I desperately tried to explain myself to Mom, but Sally took my phone away and told me I would only get it back after apologizing to Jackson.

Because of that delay, Mom's condition worsened from the stress and anger. She died despite receiving emergency treatment.

Now, Sally appeared as gentle as always. Her long, dark hair fell gently over her shoulders. The moment she saw me, her smile faded, and her brows scrunched together.

"What are you doing here? Are you planning to go abroad?"

I casually made up an excuse and brushed it off without mentioning my plans. "How could that be? I'm just passing by to use the restroom."

She looked at me dubiously, her eyes overflowing with disgust. "That had better be it."

I didn't argue, but her words struck a painful chord deep in my chest.

It turned out that the professor who had always cared for me, who was like a second mother to me, actually valued Jackson more than she valued me.

"Jackson is the student I pay the most attention to. If you hadn't hurt him, I wouldn't have cared about how much trouble you caused. But you did, and that crossed my line."

I took a deep breath. "I messed up, Professor Robinson. I've decided to apologize to Jackson. I'll admit my mistake, make a public apology, and reflect on myself in front of the whole campus."

Sally, however, didn't seem convinced. She let out a suspicious scoff.

"You're not planning some kind of trick, are you? If you dare pull anything like that, I'll strip you of all your previous credits, ban you from joining any clubs, remove you from every award selection list, and make sure you never graduate from this college."

I forced myself to put on the most sincere smile I could to quell her suspicion. Naturally, I wouldn't pull any tricks. But I would surely do something that would make them regret everything.

Sally turned and walked away, contempt written across her face. I silently watched her disappear into the distance.

Three days later, Sally arranged the time and place, then sent me a message. "Come to the auditorium. I want you to kneel and apologize to Jackson in front of the entire student body."

I didn't go to the auditorium after reading the message. Instead, I grabbed the plane ticket I had purchased and left the campus without informing anyone.

At the auditorium, someone eager for drama livestreamed the entire scene and shared it on their social media. On my way to the airport, I tuned into the livestream and saw Meryl and Kara helping Jackson sit in the front row.

Afraid that he would catch a cold, Meryl thoughtfully draped her coat over his shoulders.

Kara looked at Jackson, who seemed uneasy, and gently comforted him. "Don't be afraid. Adam was the perpetrator, while you were just the victim. All you need to do later is openly accept his apology."

Sally nodded and said coldly, "If he dares to pull any tricks today, I'll ensure that he can't survive at this college anymore."

Meanwhile, Jackson basked in their careful attention, all while pretending to be meek. He glanced around the auditorium before letting a look of disappointment settle on his face when he didn't see me.

He asked pitifully, "Why hasn't Adam come yet? Does he think apologizing to a poor student like me is too embarrassing, so he decided to stand us all up?"

Suddenly, the auditorium lights dimmed, catching the entire student body off guard. The big screen lit up, broadcasting a video.

Instantly, whispers and discussion rippled through the crowd.

Sally frowned at first. As the video continued, her expression slowly morphed into shock. "That's…"

The moment she realized what it was, she called my phone. It didn't connect because I had already blocked her.

As Meryl and Kara watched the video in disbelief, they slowly let go of their hands that had been supporting Jackson. Then, they rushed to find people who knew me.

"Where's Adam? Where did he go?"

Someone who had seen me answered, "He applied for an international exchange program and moved out of the dorm long ago. Didn't you guys know?"

Sally spoke to me as if nothing terrible had happened between us, or as if the woman who once said cruel things to me in defense of Jackson had never existed. At that thought, rage surged inside me. I silently affirmed to myself ten times, "Be the bigger person."Then I quickly finished the last few bites, stood, and prepared to leave.Sally stopped me, her gaze lingering fervently on my face. "Why do I feel like you've grown distant from me? Are you still mad at me? Or did you hear something from someone else?"It's true that I spoke up for Jackson and helped reduce his punishment, but no matter how wrong he was, it wasn't enough to affect his graduation. If that left a bad taste in your mouth, I can apologize to you on his behalf. Okay?"Anyway, studying abroad and living in a new environment must be difficult to adapt to. I can help you with your coursework and find research papers and references. How does that sound?"I stopped in my tracks. I had to say, Sally knew exactly h

Without giving me a chance to refuse, Meryl followed me back to my rented place. I had no idea what she was planning.I wasn't happy about her showing up unannounced, but in a foreign country where things could get dangerous, I still couldn't bring myself to throw her out onto the streets.Suddenly, Meryl stopped me just as I was about to return to my room. Her expression became slightly awkward."I'm sorry, Adam. Back then, I didn't know you went up there to save Jackson. When I saw him looking so helpless, I instinctively believed him. I wrongly accused you about what happened with him, and I'm sorry."Although I had known her for years, seeing the proud campus belle concede and apologize was something I had never witnessed before. Her attitude was sincere, but unfortunately, my heart no longer stirred. When I needed her trust the most, she actively chose not to stand by my side. Now that I had already swallowed all my grievances and moved on, I finally understood something.I

After arriving at my destination, I spent a few days finding a place to live. Then I applied for a part-time job near the campus to familiarize myself with my new surroundings.During that time, a good friend from back home told me that the footage had been uploaded to the campus forum. Now, everyone was demanding that Jackson be punished."Not getting the scholarship meant he wasn't good enough. He should've accepted it and moved on. Instead, he went up to the rooftop to make a scene. He's seriously disrupting the campus environment and encouraging a terrible attitude!""On top of that, he deliberately hurt someone. Adam Youngblood was clearly trying to save him, yet he shoved him onto the concrete ground and left him covered in injuries. What an ingrate!""I used to be fooled by Jackson's honest and harmless appearance. Turns out, he's twisted inside. I'm never going to associate with him again. I'll avoid him if I see him."After I finished reading the screenshot of comments, m

Meryl came up to me, glaring with her beautiful eyes. "Adam, was pushing Jackson off the rooftop not enough for you? You're tormenting him in a different way now?"What exactly did he ever do to you that makes you go so far just to target him? I truly misjudged you. I even thought that after you agreed to apologize, you were someone willing to turn over a new leaf…"Before she could continue her words, I cut her off and finished her sentence for her. "Let me guess. You're going to say I'm not allowed to leave, and whatever I do, I have to apologize to him and explain everything to the students. Right?"Meryl looked slightly surprised that I had predicted her words so accurately. She nodded and crossed her arms. "I'm glad that you're at least self-aware. I don't need to waste my breath.""Oh," I said, laughing. "Then here's my answer—I'm not doing any of that."Her face turned red with anger, just like Sally's earlier. Deep inside, I was amused. After all the defending they had don

After taking a cab, I arrived at the airport and waited in the departure lounge for my flight. Since I had booked it in a hurry, I could only get a ticket for a flight two hours later.Even so, I couldn't wait to get out of this place. While I was waiting, my phone kept blowing up with texts from my friends."Adam, did you play that video in the auditorium today? You freaked us all out.""As soon as that video ended, Meryl and Kara took off like they'd gone crazy. Jackson also ran after them.""They didn't look good, though. They seemed furious, even. Wait—they're not coming after you, are they?"They were excitedly gossiping about the incident, trying to extract more information out of me. I skimmed through the messages but didn't reply to anyone. Then, I noticed a message from my roommate."Hey, Adam. Professor Robinson seems to be asking around about you. She found out about the exchange program and went to the office. She looked really flustered."My finger paused above the
